Frieder Weiss (born August 7, 1960 in Neumarkt ) is a German engineer, exceptional artist (Interactive Vision Artist), projection designer and university lecturer.

Life

Weiss grew up in Northern Bavaria and initially studied communications engineering and computer science at the Georg Simon Ohm University of Applied Sciences in Nuremberg , where he graduated with a degree in engineering. In addition, from his youth he was very intensively involved in music and dance in his free time.

He first appeared in public at the end of the 1980s as the keyboardist of the Jazz Art Ensemble , where he began to synchronize synthesizers and image processing systems. In the following years, Weiss kept afloat financially with commissioned work for various regional engineering offices, but continued to develop his time-consuming artistic activities, sometimes despite massive resistance from industrial circles. This was followed by stations with the Palindrome Dance Company , in which the movements of the dancers were converted into visual effects using infrared cameras , computers and self-developed software programs. It was only after the turn of the millennium that some popular successes were achieved.

From the mid-2000s, performances such as Chunky Move , Glow and Mortal Engine received international attention and went on tours around the world. In the meantime, Weiss followed the call of several universities as a lecturer for movement visualization.

Installation “Torch of Freedom”, Blue Night 2015

Weiss achieved his breakthrough in August 2010 when he was hired by Kylie Minogue for the music video "Get Outta My Way" , which hit the charts as a single from the Aphrodite album. In 2011, the visual design for the Philip Glass opera “ Achenaton ” was created in Los Angeles . In the same year he received the culture award of the city of Nuremberg. This was followed by the production of the "King Kong" musical on Broadway , TV productions with the Moscow State Circus and numerous opera performances, e.g. B. at the Long Beach Opera , the Bonn Opera , the Deutsche Oper Berlin , the Stanislavski Music Theater in Moscow , at the Garayev Festival in Baku and in 2014 for Ellie Goulding .

Weiss always remained connected to his homeland, for example with performances at the State Theater in Nuremberg or the installation “Torch of Freedom”, which was shown centrally in 2015 as part of the Blue Night on Nuremberg's main market .

As a university professor, Weiss regularly lectures at the Technical University of Nuremberg, the Bern University of the Arts , the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe , the University Center in Doncaster and at the Berlin University of the Arts .
