life and work

After studying art from 1975 to 1978 (in Duisburg and Düsseldorf), Welge went on study trips to the USA, South America and Easter Island . Since 1981 he has had around 90 exhibitions at home and abroad.

Welge works expressionistically - figuratively in marble , sandstone and other stone. Sculptures in wood and bronze are also part of his work.

Works

  • Project 14. From 2001 to 2011 he worked on PROJEKT 14, an exhibition project with 14 large sculptures on the subject of torture, in which he combined contemporary torture with that of saints venerated as martyrs . The exhibition was shown from April 15 to October 9, 2016 in the cloister of the Würzburg Cathedral .
  • The crucifix , which Welge created for the Johanniskirche in 1984, is unusual: not a hanging figure of Christ, but a larger than life reclining figure with two negative hands carved at the end instead of the feet, as if to indicate our complicity.
  • A tall, naked bather stands in a play fountain, tossed around by children who jump from stone block to stone block and expose themselves to the jet of water. “And the water is nice and cool when I pour it on me” with Bert Brecht's eponymous words.
  • 8 × 4 m bronze relief for a manufacturer of fluoroscopy equipment at airports focuses on the fast images of the PC.
  • In a savings bank, Welge addressed people and work in the interplay of time and money. And in a fine restaurant, when coming or going, some visitors touch the sculpture entitled “Hey. I'm Vesta, but you can call me Loreley ”.
  • In singing bowl room of Schloss Freudenberg , an experience room for all the senses in Wiesbaden Welges sit 12 Buddha figures from red sandstone.
