history

View of the cemetery

From 1930–1932, the funerals in the community area finally took place in the Oberau cemetery, after the classicist cemetery south of the Marienpfarrkirche in the old town area, which was laid out in the early 19th century, was definitely given up. The Latin inscription "Resurrecturis" ( Those who will be resurrected ) above the entrance gates connects the old and the new cemetery in Oberau. The first cemetery to be established in Oberau is the Jewish cemetery, the establishment of which dates back to the Middle Ages and the oldest surviving grave dates back to 1830. In 1915, the Protestant cemetery was laid out near the Jewish cemetery. The corresponding project also envisaged the construction of a chapel by Arch. Steiner. A chapel designed by the architect Gustav Nolte was also built in the Catholic cemetery . In this chapel there are significant wall paintings by Ignaz Stolz and a wooden nut relief by Hans Piffrader . So each of the three religious communities found its own place. South of the cemetery, in the village of Sankt Jakob, are the military cemeteries. In the last years of the 19th century a chapel was built here too. In the course of the First World War , many soldiers were buried in the Oberau cemetery, which were then transferred to the St. Jakob military cemetery . The St. Jakob cemetery is now divided into three areas: civil, soldiers and veterans cemetery.

Other cemeteries

In the municipality of Bolzano there are two other cemeteries administered by the parishes: the Gries cemetery (which is rarely used) and the St. Jakob cemetery. These cemeteries are under the control of the municipality, but they are managed directly by the parishes. Adjacent to the Sankt Jakob cemetery is also the military cemetery, which was created on the initiative of the Association of War Veterans for the burial of the Austro-Hungarian soldiers who died in World War I and the later deceased veterans. For the historical cemetery at the Bolzano parish church (until around 1932) see also Maria Himmelfahrt (Bozen) .
