Cemetery chapel St. Johann von Nepomuk in Pleystein

The cemetery chapel of the Upper Palatinate town of Pleystein is dedicated to St. Consecrated to Johannes Nepomuk . It was built in the middle of the 18th century. It belongs to the "Parish Pleystein".

history

On February 20, 1725, the nurse Schepper submitted an application to build a chapel for the dead in Pleystein. This was justified by the fact that there were chapels in many other villages in which masses for poor souls are read. In addition, the land for the chapel was donated by a widow and various benefactors and brotherhoods had agreed to support the construction. The construction was approved by the government of the Electorate of the Palatinate in Neuburg on the condition that the construction and maintenance of the building were borne by the donors.

As can be seen from the year “1750” above the entrance, it was only completed 25 years after this confirmation. Income came from committed donations and an offering box. The first renovation took place in 1812. A Franziska Vitzthum gave a chasuble to the chapel in 1829 and a prayer stool in 1844, both of which she inherited from the late Abbot Magnus Singer.

Memorial for the fallen of the two world wars

A fundamental renovation took place in 1964/65; Instead of a war memorial, the pastor Wittmann suggested designing the cemetery chapel as a memorial for the fallen.

During this work, valuable epitaphs were found, which are now attached to the inner and outer walls of the chapel. A tombstone found under the plinth of the altar bore the inscription in a frieze , " Those who live Christians, who just remember, will die blessed and inherit heaven." Mattias Voith, vixit annos LV, obiit Junii MDCXVII, the dot certainly, uncertain the day, the hour nobody knows, remember and be there that every hour is the lecte. The coat of arms in a coat of arms has been chipped off. A tombstone that was recovered from the floor of the chapel bears the letters HWB , the year 1695 and the coat of arms of the bakers' guild. Another tombstone has now been placed inside the chapel. It was made for the son of Pastor Miesel, who died on May 3, 1596. The child is dressed in a long dress with wide sleeves and an apron, the head rests on a pillow with tassels. A Pax disc with a resting lamb is depicted at the child's feet, inscription contains the text, IDA LAURENT MORTE MYSELII PASTORIS PRIMUS FILIUS HIC RECIBAT 1596 5 APRILIS . A fragment of an epitaph with the coat of arms of the von Königsfeld family, which was found in a farm in 1964, is attached to the western outer wall. Gravestones that were previously used as doorsteps also lean against the cemetery wall; one bears the year 1515 , another the name Hans von Beureit and the stonemason mark of Christoph Herong from 1650; The door frames are also made from tombstones.

The inauguration of the renovated chapel took place on July 18, 1965.

Chapel building

The chapel has a hipped roof and has plastered fields . The sacristy is closed on three sides, on the roof there is a clapboard roof turret with an onion dome , which is closed off by a copper tip and a wind vane . The year "1750" can be read above the entrance portal. The cemetery chapel is located in the middle of the Pleystein cemetery. The cemetery wall was built from rubble stones in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Interior

The baroque altarpiece shows St. Johannes Nepomuk. There is a forged dining grid in front of it . Also worth mentioning is the granite block offering with a metal top and a locking mechanism with the year "1776".

The war memorial in the chapel consists of stone slabs with the names of the fallen soldiers of the 1st and 2nd World War , which are arranged around a central metal cross with thorns.
