Friedrich Adam Julius von Wangenheim (born February 8, 1749 in Sonneborn , † March 25, 1800 in Gumbinnen ) was a German dendrologist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Wangenh. "

origin

His parents were the Saxon-Gotha chamberlain Julius Adam von Wangenheim (* April 5, 1721 - July 21, 1763) and his wife Sophie Christiane Wilhelmine von Steinsdorf (1733-1802). His father was a buyer of the Upper Winterstein Castle.

Life

He first received military training in the Gotha service, but then took his leave as a lieutenant in order to be trained as a forester. When the Landgrave of Hessen-Kassel set up an auxiliary corps for the English during the American War of Independence , Wangenheim joined this and went to North America in 1777. He became Premier-Lieutenant with a patent on December 14, 1776 and joined the Hessian Jäger Corps under Major Karl von Prüschenck . The troops embarked for America in 1777 and on December 13, 1777 Wangenheim became staff captain . He took part in the battles at Brandywic and Charleston .

In the eight years of his stay in America he carried out extensive forest science studies; as early as 1780 he sent his first book to Europe. He returned with the Jägerkorps and was able to move back into Kassel on May 17, 1784. After he had hoped in vain for a job in the forestry service, he took his leave on November 8, 1786.

Wangenheim dedicated his second book, published in 1787, to King Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia. Thereupon he was appointed head forest master of the Lithuanian War and Domain Chamber in 1788 . After a serious illness in the winter of 1799, he died and was buried in the garden of his Lasdinehlen estate (Gumbinnen district) .
