Eduard Handtmann

Friedrich August Eduard Handtmann (born May 28, 1842 in Potsdam ; † November 24, 1912 there ) was a German Protestant clergyman and collector of sagas .

Life

Eduard Handtmann's father, Karl Handtmann, was employed as a teacher at the Cadet House in Potsdam and was a candidate for ministry. In 1850 he received the ordination and in the same year to a pastorate after Zellin (at Königsberg Nm.) (Now Czelin appointed). He worked here until his death on July 31, 1883.

Eduard Handtmann received his education in the high school in Königsberg in the Neumark . Later he studied in Berlin , Tübingen and Halle (Saale) the subject Protestant Theology . He was ordained on November 1, 1868. His first pastors were in Kriescht (today Krzeszyce ) and in the neighboring town of Mauskow (Neumark). On October 6, 1869, he married the daughter of the senior teacher Wilhelm Rudolf Stahr from Stettin . From 1875 to 1907 he worked in the parish in Seedorf (now part of the municipality of Lenzen ). His four children were born here.

Handtmann was a member of the Berlin Anthropological Society and the German Anthropological Society . In addition to numerous articles in newspapers and magazines, he was a member of the Society for Local Studies of the Province of Brandenburg .

His most famous work of this time was the saga collection Neue Sagen der Mark Brandenburg from 1883. Theodor Fontane used the saga collection extensively in his hikes through the Mark Brandenburg (Volume 5, Five Castles, published in 1889) and was even exposed to allegations of plagiarism . In the foreword, Handtmann is set aside for his "most excellent collection of sagas":

"As far as I know, all of the books I have used have been named in the text, with the sole exception (which is why I am catching up on it here) from E. Handtmann's book" Neue Sagen aus Mark Brandenburg ", an excellent collection of sagas ..."

In 1912 Handtmann published a collection of Potsdam sagas and fairy tales . After his retirement as a pastor, he returned to Potsdam. He died here on November 27, 1912. His grave was in the old cemetery in Potsdam and can no longer be found today.
