Friedrich August von Cotta (born March 17, 1799 in Zillbach , † October 18, 1860 in Tharandt ) was a German forest scientist and professor at the Tharandt Forestry College .

Life

He was the second son of Heinrich Cotta and his wife Christiane Ortmann (1739-1802). In 1811 he moved with his parents to Tharandt , where his father had founded a forest academy.

He received his education at the private Lange institute. From 1816 to 1819 he studied at his father's forest academy, which was elevated to a state institution on June 17, 1816. He then carried out some forest management work, first in Saxony under the direction of his father, then from 1822 to 1823 under the direction of his uncle, the Oberforstrat Gottlob König (1779–1849) in Ruhla .

On June 2, 1824 he was employed as a hunting instructor at the academy in Tharandt. From May 18, 1832, the lecture on forest management (later also on silviculture and forest management) was held to support his father. He also received the title of forest inspector. On June 14, 1848 he was given - in addition to his academic teaching post - the administration of the Tharander Revier. On March 31, 1852 he was awarded the title of professor. But a nervous problem forced him to take a year-long vacation on April 1, 1860. He looked in vain for relief in Teplitz-Bad . He died on October 18, 1860.

Act

August of Cota was practical. He was taken into the forest by his father as a young boy. He later learned through extensive trips. He was considered an able hunter and even in later years directed the academic hunts with fondness and great expertise. He himself limited his publications to some work in the Tharander yearbook . He continued to reissue his father's works, adding many illustrations to them.
