Friedrich Boas

Friedrich Boas (born November 28, 1886 in Hennenbach near Ansbach , Bavaria , † March 15, 1960 in Munich ) was a German botanist and phytomedicist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " F.Boas ".

Life

Boas, son of a farmer, studied natural sciences at the University of Munich from 1906 and received his doctorate there in 1912 with a thesis in botany . From 1913 he was a member of the teaching staff at the Academy (from 1920 University) for Agriculture and Brewery in Weihenstephan. From 1916 to 1929 he worked there as an associate professor at the botanical laboratory and at the plant protection station. In 1930 he was appointed full professor of botany at the Technical University of Munich , where he worked until his retirement in 1951.

He became a member of the NSDAP at the latest in the time of National Socialism . According to his head teacher, he was the "only representative of the movement ... and accordingly dean". During the Second World War he worked on the Nutrition from the Forest project in order to counteract the supply bottleneck on the "nutrition front". He was a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

research

During his time in Weihenstephan , Boas promoted the development of appropriate plant protection in Bavaria. For agricultural practice he wrote the guide " The most important cereal diseases and their control " (1923). In the same year he published the book " The Lupine as an Object of Plant Research " together with Friedrich Merkenschlager . Also noteworthy is his work " The Plant as a Colloid System ", published in 1928 , an attempt to apply findings from colloid chemistry in plant physiological research.

In 1937 his main scientific work, the book " Dynamic Botany ", was published. Boaz was the first to introduce this term into scientific terminology and particularly emphasize its importance for agriculture. He did not regard plants as static objects of science, but as dynamic members of natural communities. The book, which was published several times, made Boaz's name known in wide circles. Of the other independent publications, his work should be emphasized: " Biologische Zukunft " (1939), a thoughtful treatise on plant nutrition . In 1930 Boas was one of the founders of the magazine "Archiv für Mikrobiogie" and was co-editor of the series "Naturwissenschaft und Landwirtschaft" (19 issues, 1924–1936). Even after his retirement, he worked tirelessly. In 1958 he published the book " Pointer Plants . Dealing with Weeds in the Arable Landscape ", which is important for the practice of plant cultivation .

Significant for the universality of Boas' world of thought is his " Biologen-Brevier ", published together with Merkenschlager in 1947 , a collection of quotations from the works of important thinkers. In the book " Die Wiese der Glückseligkeit " ( The Meadow of Bliss ), first published in 1949, Boas gives an overview of his ideas on natural philosophy, which flow into a comprehensive theory of agricultural values.
