Friedrich Dahl

Karl Friedrich Theodor Dahl (born June 24, 1856 in Rosenhofer Brök , Duchy of Holstein , † June 29, 1929 in Greifswald ) was a German zoologist .

Life

As the son of a farmer, he studied at the universities in Leipzig , Freiburg , Berlin and Kiel . He became a private lecturer in 1887 and made trips to the Baltic States and the Bismarck Archipelago and was a participant in the plankton expedition of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in 1889 . In 1898 he became curator at the Zoological Museum Berlin. In 1902 Dahl took part in the public discussion in the Berlin Zoological Garden about the biological views of the Jesuit Erich Wasmann.

He has studied many zoological groups, but preferably spiders . He was interested in biogeography . In 1903 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina Scholars' Academy .

On June 19, 1899, he married Maria Dahl (1872–1972), who also worked at the Institute for Zoology in Kiel and has also published several works on spiders.

He founded the scientific book series: The animal world of Germany and the adjacent parts of the sea according to their characteristics and according to their way of life , which has been published since 1925 (in different publishers) under his name (quoted as: Dahl: Tierwelt or Die Tierwelt Deutschlands ), until 2008 are in 81 titles appeared in this series.
