Friedrich Eberhard Rambach (philologist)

Friedrich Eberhard Rambach (born July 14, 1767 in Quedlinburg , † June 30, 1826 in Reval ) was a German classical philologist , high school teacher and writer .

Life

Friedrich Eberhard Rambach was the son of Johann Jakob Rambach and Maria Juliana, née Boysen († 1773). After his father was elected senior pastor of St. Michaeliskirche in Hamburg in 1780 , Rambach attended the Johanneum there . From 1786 he studied Protestant theology in Halle , where he received his doctorate in 1793 with a dissertation De Mileto ejusque coloniis (Halle 1790). From 1791 he was sub-rector of the Friedrichswerder high school in Berlin , from 1794 he was also professor of antiquity at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and Mechanical Sciences in Berlin and from 1801 was also director of an "Institute for Young Women", so a kind Higher daughter school . During his time in Berlin, he worked productively as a writer, wrote plays and horror novels and included his student Ludwig Tieck in his work .

In 1803 he was appointed professor of classical philology at the University of Dorpat , where he was several times director of the Dorpater schools (1804, 1810, 1816 and 1820), dean of the faculty of philosophy (1814 and 1815) and rector of the university (1822). In 1826 he died on a bathing trip to Reval.

He was married twice, first on March 27, 1798 to Juliana Benigna, née Heydemann, divorced Schulze. After her death in 1805 he married Henriette von Kymmel on July 29, 1808.
