Friedrich Erdmann Petri

Samuel Friedrich Erdmann Petri (born October 20, 1776 in Budissin , † June 11, 1850 in Fulda ) was a German theologian, teacher and author.

Life

Petri studied theology and philosophy in Leipzig from 1796 to 1799 and received his doctorate there. From 1803 he took up his work as a teacher at the school teachers' seminar in Dresden . He soon became deputy director of the school teachers' seminar in Dresden-Friedrichstadt . On March 20, 1805, the Prince of Fulda, Hereditary Prince Wilhelm I (Netherlands), appointed him professor of history and the German language at the newly built high school in Fulda. At the end of 1806 he was also appointed pastor of the Protestant parish, founded in 1802, with around 300 Protestant (Calvinist) believers. He also worked as a garrison pastor. The prince also entrusted him with teaching his second son, Prince Friedrich. Under the Grand Duke of Frankfurt, Karl Theodor von Dalberg , Petri was appointed provincial commissioner of the two evangelical consistory in Fulda and Hanau and inspector of the evangelical churches and schools in the Fulda department. In 1813 Petri was given the title of councilor. From 1824 he was inspector of the school teachers' college, in 1826 he rose to become a member of the school board. In 1834 he became Metropolitan and inspector of the Protestant schools in the administrative districts of Fulda and Hünfeld . In the autumn of 1835 Petri retired as a professor and in 1839, meanwhile as consistorial councilor, he was relieved of his position as pastor in Fulda.

He wrote several foreign dictionaries and textbooks on literary history.
