Friedrich Ferdinand Leopold , Archduke of Austria, (born May 14, 1821 in Vienna , † October 5, 1847 in Venice ) was the third son of Archduke Karl and Princess Henriette of Nassau-Weilburg . He was thus a grandson of Emperor Leopold II on his father's side .

Life

Friedrich enjoyed a very careful upbringing from excellent teachers (e.g. Franz Ritter von Hauslab , Wilhelm von Lebzeltern ). In 1837, after joining the Austrian Navy , he devoted himself to sea ​​service and soon became a ship's captain. In 1839 Archduke Friedrich undertook trips to the Orient with Anton von Prokesch-Osten . In 1840 he distinguished himself in the Syrian campaign of the London Alliance ( England , Austria , Russia , Turkey ) against Muhammad Ali Pascha . On November 3, 1840, Archduke Frederick took the Burǧ al-Chazna tower of the Akko citadel and hoisted the Allied flags. During the conquest of Sidon Castle (near Beirut ) and the capture of Akko , he was awarded the Order of Maria Theresa for his bravery . In 1842 he made trips to Algeria and England. In 1844 he was appointed Vice Admiral and Navy Commander in Chief. He laid the foundation for numerous reforms and for the redesign of the Austrian navy, which at that time was still completely Venetian. In 1845 he was solemnly accepted into the Sovereign Order of Malta .

Friedrich died of complications from jaundice .
