Fritz Fichter

Carl Friedrich Rudolf "Fritz" Fichter (born July 6, 1869 in Basel ; † June 6, 1952 there ) was a Swiss chemist .

family

His parents were the ribbon manufacturer Johann Benedikt Fichter (1825–1913) and Marie Elisabeth, the daughter of the Basel cloth merchant Leonhard Seiler (1796–1855). His grandfather, Johann Jakob (1796–1879) was a partner in the DeBary & Bischoff tape factory until 1853 and then founded his own factory. His brother was the pastor Johann Heinrich (Hans) (1861–1947.)

In 1904 he married Maria Louise (1877–1959), the daughter of the historian August Christoph Bernoulli (1839–1921), with whom he had three sons and three daughters.

He studied chemistry at the University of Basel and from 1890 in Strasbourg at Rudolph Fittig, where he in 1894 with the work About propyl itaconic -Citraconsäure and -Mesaconsäure with distinction for Dr. phil. nat. PhD . In 1896 he returned to Basel and became Jules Piccard's assistant . In 1897 he completed his habilitation and in 1903 became associate professor at the University of Basel and in 1911 full professor of inorganic chemistry . In 1932 he became rector of the university.

At first he mainly worked on preparative inorganic chemistry, where he succeeded in preparing the first pure form of beryllium . Later he turned to electrochemistry and investigated the intermediate products formed at the anode and cathode and their reaction consequences.

In 1918 he co-founded Helvetica Chimica Acta with Philippe-Auguste Guye (1862-1922) and was its editor until 1948.

He has multiple honorary doctorates , received the French order Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur and in 1948 the Paracelsus Medal of the Swiss Chemical Society . In 1932 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
