August Bernoulli (historian)

August Christoph Bernoulli (born May 19, 1839 in Basel ; † April 29, 1921 there ) was a Swiss historian .

life and work

Bernoulli was the youngest of three sons of Leonhard Bernoulli and Elisabeth, née Bär from Aarau . His father was a drugstore in the property "zur goldenenen Münz" on the market square and was a city ​​councilor in Basel.

After finishing school, Bernoulli worked for a short time in his father's business. He then worked for a trading company in Marseille and in 1864 in Valencia . Since his real interest was in geography and history , he studied from 1866 at the universities in Basel , Bonn and Berlin . Bernoulli received his doctorate in 1872 with the thesis "The Lucerne Chronicle of Melchior Russ ".

August Bernoulli married Johanna Maria, née Burckhardt (1846–1916) in 1873. They had three children together.

In the same year he was accepted into the Historical and Antiquarian Society in Basel . The then President of the Society Wilhelm Vischer called on Bernoulli to collaborate on the Basel Chronicles . After Vischer's unexpected death, Bernoulli carried out the work alone until 1915. From 1883 to 1904, Bernouilli also held the office of treasurer in the Historical and Antiquarian Society. His successors were Paul Burckhardt and August Burckhardt .

Bernoulli was elected to the board of the general history research society of Switzerland in 1886 . The work on the Basel Chronicles was Bernoulli's life's work. In addition, he published numerous articles on Swiss and, in particular, Basel history and historiography.
