action

If computer games have a glitch in Bailley , it means that video game monsters are moving into the real world as digital constructs. The company behind the virtual reality game Hinobi Smash trains its employees to become glitch techs in the back rooms of their Hinobi electronics store , who use their technology and gamer logic to fight glitches and capture them, for which they receive experience points. In the case of civilians who have noticed something of the glitches, they can delete the memory of it, "reset" in gamer language.

When the Hi-5 player wins during a Hinobi Smash tournament against the champion Mitch Williams, a glitch tech, through cooperation with Me-KO, a glitch breaks out and all spectators and participants are reset, which however fails with Miko. Because she still remembers, she goes to Five to speak to Mitch, who is fighting a glitch. After posing as Glitch Tech novices and helping him defeat Glitch, they are employed as such at Hinobi. In a team of two, the planning Five and the hyperactive, impatient Miko fulfill missions from then on, fight glitches and collect experience points in order to level up and receive rewards, such as the companion animal Ally, a firebird.

On the way, Five encounters a mecha golem he calls Alpha, whom he befriends while helping each other. Miko, in turn, realizes that Ally needs food from her original game to recharge, and so activates its firebird form. After completing the level, with Alpha sacrificing herself, the two learn that Emma simulated the glitch to teach them something. Five, realizing that companions are not interchangeable, receives Alpha as a companion.

After a few fights against opponents, in which Miko and Five with their gamers skills are more likely to take over the fights than to train Lexi, she leaves the simulation to come to the tournament. Five cannot turn off the simulation because Lexi's player belt is still activated. After she loses at the tournament, Five tells her that she wants to take off her belt, activates the simulation again and Lexi still has to defeat the final boss. When she succeeds in doing this by using gamers skills, she eventually receives a virtual trophy.

Production and publication

Glitch Techs was developed by Eric Robles and Dan Milano and produced by the Nickelodeon Animation Studio in Burbank . The series was first announced in May 2016. 20 episodes were ordered, which should originally appear in 2018. In January 2019, production stopped on the second half of the twenty episodes, while completion of the first half was not affected. Robels made it clear that the series has not been canceled and that Nickelodeon has continued to plan to release a season of twenty episodes. After a partnership deal between Nickelodeon and Netflix that was signed in November 2019, it would be announced in early 2020 that the series will be released on the streaming service. The first season with nine episodes, the first in double length, appeared on February 21, 2020. The second half of the twenty episodes is to appear on August 17 of the same year as the second season. Milano says there are ten more scripts for previously unrealized episodes.

reception

Greg Wheeler writes on The Review Geek: "Glitch Techs is a wonderfully amusing and aesthetically pleasing animated series that features dazzling hand-drawn images with really well-written individual stories and consistently good morals." The series takes a refreshingly positive stance on video games: Friendship, teamwork, loyalty and leadership are in the foreground, but are ultimately subordinate to the overarching message of how video games can bring us together and get the best out of us. "

John Serba writes on Decider: “Glitch Techs is colorful, funny, happy and fast-paced, but not an over-stimulating torrent of stimuli. The main characters are original and crisp, never unbearable and the plot is tight, not overcrowded. "
