Friedrich Herneck

Friedrich Herneck (born February 16, 1909 in Brüx ; † September 18, 1993 in Berlin ) was a German historian of science who was best known for his research on the history of natural sciences and his biographical contributions to Ernst Mach and Albert Einstein .

Live and act

Friedrich Herneck passed his Abitur in 1928 and then studied natural sciences and philosophy at the German University in Prague . From 1934 to 1938 he worked as a freelancer in theaters. In 1940 he joined the NSDAP . In 1941 he was awarded the title of Dr. at the University of Erlangen with the work The German Stage Sounding of the Last Fifty Years, determined from recordings by important stage speakers. phil. PhD .

After the Second World War he was a teacher at the State Party School of the SED Brandenburg from 1946 to 1952 and lecturer in dialectical materialism at the “Karl Liebknecht” University of Education in Potsdam from 1952 to 1954 . From 1954 he taught at the Humboldt University in Berlin , where he was dismissed in 1958 on charges of revisionism . The reason was his work on the chemist Wilhelm Ostwald and Ernst Mach as well as his support for the positions of Robert Havemann . However, the dismissal was withdrawn and converted into a revocation of the license to teach. In 1961 he completed his habilitation with the thesis The chemist Wilhelm Ostwald and his struggle to spread a scientifically based worldview . From 1964 he was able to resume teaching as a lecturer. In 1967 he was appointed professor for the history of natural sciences. In 1974 he retired .
