Karl-Friedrich Wessel (2016)

Karl-Friedrich Wessel (born June 14, 1935 in Hamburg ) is Professor i. R. for philosophy of science and human ontogenetics . He is the scientific director of the human ontogenetics project at the Humboldt University in Berlin and the acting chairman of the "Society for Human ontogenetics". He is editor of the series “Berlin Studies on the Philosophy of Science and Human ontogenetics”.

In his work he dealt critically with normative questions of human development and thematizes human ontogenetically relevant problems in the fields of education, medicine and nursing science, but also gender research, migration and questions of technical and scientific responsibility. The core of his work on the philosophy of science is particularly methodological problems in the human and life sciences. In the early 1980s, together with Günter Tembrock , Hans-Dieter Schmidt and Günter Dörner, he founded the research project “Biopsychosocial Unity Human”. Together they developed a theoretical model and a critical approach for interdisciplinary research in the human sciences , thereby establishing a new discipline, human ontogenetics .

Career

Wessel began with a teacher training and as a vocational school teacher. From 1957 to 1962 he studied philosophy and theoretical physics at the Humboldt University of Berlin (HUB). He received his doctorate in philosophy in 1968 with a study on critical realism and completed his habilitation in 1975 with a thesis on philosophy and pedagogy under Hermann Ley .

From 1977 to 1989 he held the professorship for Philosophical Problems in Natural Sciences at the HUB, succeeding Hermann Ley, renamed in 1980 in Philosophical Problems in Natural Sciences, Technical and Mathematical Sciences . In 1990 he was the founder and head of the Interdisciplinary Institute for the Philosophy of Science and Human ontogenetics , which was established at the HUB until 2000 and whose research activities will be continued within the framework of the human ontogenetics project at this university.

Wessel has developed and built an important scientific school in the fields of philosophy of science and human ontogenetics , and has headed it for three decades. He supervised 85 dissertations and 41 post -doctoral theses / B doctorates , 75 of them as first reviewer; His scientific publications include more than 300 scientific articles, specialist journals and periodicals, monographs, university papers, series, reports, reviews and teaching programs.

A number of people active in education, upbringing and culture, politics and business have emerged from his academic environment . So was Stefan Michał Kwiatkowski member of numerous government commissions on vocational education and training research in Poland , including the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy, the Central Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (National Research Institute) and also chairman of the scientific program of the Center for Lifelong Learning and multimedia. Mention may be further Martin Dube , who as part of the new government in 1990 by Lothar de Maizière at the Ministry of Economy to the State Secretary was appointed and was responsible there for fundamental issues of economic policy and January Hofmann , Director of the State Institute for School and Media Berlin-Brandenburg and State Secretary in Ministry of Culture of the State of Saxony-Anhalt and also Wolfgang Beese , long-time city councilor for culture in Erfurt and 2014 candidate for the state parliament of Thuringia.

The following people should be mentioned in business: Hans-Peter Böhm , Vice President Governement Affairs at Siemens AG and Michael Ketting , long-time member of the board of directors at Intertractor AG in Gevelsberg .

Resulting from the scientific school of Wessel emerged university teachers ( professors , university lecturers are) and were - according to the from the outset underlying interdisciplinary approach - in very different fields involved:

Wessel was elected a member of the learned society Leibniz Society of Sciences in Berlin in 2016.
