Main building in the Kiepenheuerallee

The Potsdam University of Applied Sciences is a university of applied sciences in the state capital of Brandenburg, Potsdam . It was founded in 1991 and began teaching in the 1991/92 winter semester.

history

After the political change in 1990, the state of Brandenburg was also re-established. The university landscape that existed until then had to be restructured on the basis of the laws that were now in force. The Potsdam University of Applied Sciences was founded in Potsdam in 1991 on the site and partly in the buildings of the former barracks on Bornstedter Feld and in the Neu Fahrland district . In the 1991/92 winter semester, studies in the social affairs department began using empty buildings in New Fahrland. The founding rector of the university was Helmut Knüppel . In the year it was founded, the university's social affairs department moved to the former institute for teacher training in downtown Potsdam on Friedrich-Ebert-Straße.

In 1992, courses began in the fields of architecture , design , civil engineering and archive - library - documentation , so that from then on the university was organized into five departments at different locations. In 1993, Volker Bley was appointed Chancellor of the university and the Society of Friends and Supporters of the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam eV , a support association, was founded. In 1994 the departments of architecture, civil engineering and design moved to the newly built campus of the University of Applied Sciences in the north of Potsdam. The Institute for Training, Research and Development was founded as a registered association. After the departments moved to Kiepenheuerallee in 1994, the university management and administration followed a year later. The courses in cultural work and restoration were established.

The International Meeting Center for Science Potsdam opened on the Kiepenheuerallee campus in 1999 . In the following year, the course in European Media Studies was relaunched. Helene Kleine was the first female rector to take office in 2001. The Kiepenheuerallee campus has been steadily expanded: in the laboratory and workshop building completed in 2003, the social work course could begin as a distance learning course for the first time . As part of the Bologna Process , all degrees were converted from Diplom (FH) to Bachelor and Master .

Between 2006 and 2009, the university management had a new main building erected on Kiepenheuerallee. Johannes Vielhaber was appointed Rector of the University of Applied Sciences in 2007. Eckehard Binas followed him in 2013 as President of the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences. In 2014 a new seminar building was opened.

Education

All courses are modularized and are billed with internationally comparable credits . Almost all departments offer both bachelor and master’s courses. Students can also take part in courses at all Brandenburg universities. The bachelor's and master's degree in European Media Studies is offered jointly by two universities in Potsdam, in addition to the university of applied sciences, the University of Potsdam . Furthermore, the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences represents the only design location in Brandenburg on the Kiepenheuerallee campus with the interface design course, which is almost unique in Germany .

In 2014, social work, education and upbringing in childhood and social work were the main focus of family in the oldest department of the university, social affairs. The architecture and urban development department offers courses in architecture and urban development, restoration, cultural work and building research. Building research in the master’s degree is affiliated with the civil engineering department. There are also civil engineering and building conservation courses there. Degree programs in the field of design: communication design , product design , interface design, design and European media studies (in cooperation with the University of Potsdam). The archive-library-documentation department has meanwhile been renamed information science . Courses in this department are Archive BA, Archival Studies MA (advanced training), Library Science BA, Information and Data Management BA (which emerged from the course "Information and Documentation BA") and Information Sciences MA a further education as a scientific documentary, offered as a scientific documentary.

Higher education institutions

Central and decentralized student advisory services, an international office, career service, start-up services and other initiatives support students with advice and further training offers. The Places for Families initiative, which was created in conjunction with seven other universities, aims to develop an environment for family-friendly studying.

The Institute for Information and Documentation has been located at the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences since 1992 and was officially affiliated to the Information Science Department on January 6, 2010. It is the successor to the Training Institute for Documentation in Frankfurt am Main . The Institute will find information regarding training instead.

The Information Center for Information Science and Practice is a central information and documentation center for the field of information science. The Brandenburg Institute for Entrepreneurship and SME Promotion is a joint institute of the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences, the University of Potsdam and the Brandenburg University of Technology . It is intended to promote entrepreneurial thinking and action in teaching and research. The Interaction Design Lab, which has been established in the design department since 2004, is intended to support interaction research and software evaluation.

Locations

The college was divided into two locations. The majority of the courses took place on the University of Applied Sciences campus (formerly Pappelallee campus or Kiepenheuerallee campus ) in the north of Potsdam . The first buildings were built here as early as the 1930s as barracks for Infantry Regiment No. 9 of the Wehrmacht; they were called Adolf Hitler Barracks . After the end of World War II , the Red Army used the facilities; after their departure as a result of German reunification , all buildings were empty. - The laboratory and workshop building opened in 2003 and the main building with the library of the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam , theater workshop and lecture halls, which went into operation in 2009 , have offered work opportunities for all fields of study since the 2010s.

The second location from 1992 onwards was the Alter Markt campus , where the social affairs and information sciences departments were located. This was demolished as part of the redesign of the city center and above all as a result of the reconstruction of the Potsdam City Palace in 2017-2018.

The military buildings in Neu Fahrland, which were used in the year the university was founded, were abandoned after the turn of the century.
