Gerd Günter Dörner (born July 13, 1929 in Hindenburg / Silesia ; † March 30, 2018 ) was a German physician and professor of endocrinology .

Live and act

After graduating from high school in Halberstadt , Dörner studied medicine at the Humboldt University in Berlin from 1948 to 1953 . After the state examination and doctorate in 1953, he became an assistant in internal medicine at the Charité in 1954, and from 1954 to 1956 he was an assistant in gynecology and obstetrics in Fürstenberg / Oder . He then received an assistant position for pathology in Berlin-Buch .

From 1957 he worked at the Institute for Experimental Endocrinology at the Humboldt University in Berlin, where he qualified as a professor in 1960 and became a full professor of endocrinology in 1964 . From 1962 he headed the Institute for Experimental Endocrinology, initially on a temporary basis and then until 1997 as Director. During this time he succeeded in giving the institute a national and international profile, including being the president of numerous international symposia.

His research focus was on developmental biology , functional teratology and neuroendocrine immune prophylaxis . The scientific field of functional teratology , which deals with self-organization processes of the neuroendocrine system during human development, was redeveloped through his work.

In the early 1980s, Dörner founded the research project “Biopsychosocial Human Unity” together with Günter Tembrock , Karl-Friedrich Wessel and Hans-Dieter Schmidt . Together they developed a theoretical model and a critical approach for interdisciplinary research in the human sciences , thereby establishing a new discipline, human ontogenetics .

After German reunification, Dörner was a member of a group of experts on the Science Council for the restructuring of East German universities. He was also a member of structural and appointment committees at the Charité.

From 1975 to 1992 he was the editor-in-chief of the Journal for Experimental and Clinical Endocrinology . He has published over 400 original works in renowned specialist journals as well as over 50 book chapters and three monographs. Dörner was a member of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina (since 1974) and the International Academy for Sexual Research as well as a founding member of several international societies for neuroendocrinology, psychoneuroendocrinology, pre- and perinatal psychology and medicine, developmental biology and gynecological endocrinology. He was also an honorary member of numerous international specialist societies. In 1965 he received the national prize. In 1988 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Teikyō University in Tokyo . On October 4th, 2002 Günter Dörner was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany by Federal President Johannes Rau .

Controversial research and publications on homosexuality

During his research work in the GDR, Dörner announced that he had found evidence that homosexuality could have endocrinological causes, and therefore demanded that homosexuality be recognized as a natural variation of sexual behavior, which was in line with the social and legal stance of the GDR.

Dörner's research results were based, among other things, on blood samples that he had also received from West German psychiatric university clinics whose employees were scientifically interested but had not informed their patients about this use. Presumably because of this, the West German Society for Social Science Sexual Research assumed that he wanted to prevent homosexuality on an endocrinological basis.

On March 9, 1989, on Dörner's initiative and on the basis of his research results, the International Congress of the International Society of Prenatal and Perinatal Psychology and Medicine in Jerusalem recommended to the World Health Organization that it should no longer regard homosexuality as a disease. In 1991 the WHO deleted homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases (ICD).

The Magnus Hirschfeld Society protested against being awarded the Federal Cross of Merit because it had doubts about Dörner's scientific approach to the subject of homosexuality .
