Live and act

Gerhard Bettendorf attended the secondary school in Betzdorf / Sieg until 1943 and was then drafted into military service in the Sudetenland during World War II . He was briefly in American captivity . He passed his Abitur after the end of the war in the summer of 1946. Bettendorf then studied medicine at the universities of Bonn and Heidelberg from 1947 to 1953 . In 1953 he received his doctorate there . This was followed by two years as an assistant in Hamburg , Hameln and Tübingen . There he worked at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry under Adolf Butenandt until the beginning of specialist training in 1955 at the gynecological clinic of the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf under Gerhard Schubert . During this time, Bettendorf developed a special interest in clinical and experimental studies on endocrinology and, in particular, on research in the field of pituitary hormones. He remained connected to this scientific field throughout his life. With his habilitation in 1961 he laid the foundations for the isolation, characterization and clinical testing of human gonadotropins. He then spent a research stay at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston , Texas . In 1962 he founded the first department for clinical and experimental endocrinology at the University Women's Clinic in Hamburg with the support of Schubert and became its first director. In 1968 he was appointed associate professor and in 1972 he was appointed full professor. On March 1, 1983, Carl Schirren founded the Center for Reproductive Medicine at the University Hospital Hamburg and became its first director. Four years later, Gerhard Bettendorf took over the management of the center and held it until his retirement in 1991.

Merits

Bettendorf's merits include the introduction of human gonadotropins to induce ovulation in ovarian insufficiency with subsequent pregnancies (for the first time also in patients after removal of the pituitary gland ), as well as the clinical testing of clomiphene , LH-RH , GnRH agonists , prolactin inhibitors and antiandrogens . His publications on the history of endocrinology and reproductive medicine and on the history of pituitary hormones have become standard works.
