Friedrich Jay (born May 9, 1863 in Leipzig , † March 21, 1942 in Vienna ) was a German banker .

Life

Jay was a son of the businessman Georg Christian Jay and his wife Caroline Alice Jay geb. Becker. The Jay family immigrated to Frankfurt am Main during the French Revolution , and Georg Christian Jay settled in Leipzig after his marriage.

Friedrich Jay completed his school days in Leipzig and graduated from high school. Then, at his father's request, he began a commercial apprenticeship in a Leipzig trading company. Through the mediation of his uncle, the banker Friedrich Becker, he was able to supplement his training with several internships in Switzerland ( Zurich ) and Great Britain ( London ).

After returning to his hometown, Jay got a job at the Becker & Co. bank , which his uncle Friedrich Becker ran. 1890 appointed him to the board of this bank to the general partners . As such, Jay played a key role in the restructuring of the Leipzig Horse Railway Company ; The Great Leipziger Straßenbahn AG emerged from the Leipziger Tramway Company .

In 1890 Jay married Melitta Günther, daughter of the Leipzig council actuary Carl Günther and granddaughter of the Leipzig industrial pioneer Carl Heine . With her he had four sons, including the future industrialist Fritz Jay-von Opel .

When his uncle died in 1895, Jay inherited the Becker & Co. banking house and took over as managing director of the bank. As such, he promoted industrial development as much as possible. With his help the company Sächsische Enaillier- und Stanzwerke in Lauter / Sa. , Union Preßhefe AG in Leipzig-Mockau, Langbein-Pfanhauser Werke in Leipzig-Sellerhausen and Leipziger Außenbahn AG founded. Friedrich Jay presided over all of these companies as chairman of the supervisory board.

In addition to these offices and the management of the Becker banking house, Friedrich Jay was also represented on other supervisory boards of various companies and companies. When in 1898 the Becker & Co. bank was converted into a partnership limited by shares (KGaA) and joined the Berlin Disconto-Gesellschaft with a capital of 10 million marks , Jay retained the post of managing director. Even when this was taken over by the Leipziger Allgemeine Deutsche Credit-Anstalt (ADCA) in 1901 , Jay was able to continue as managing director. In 1913 he was elected President of the ADCA.

As Consul General , Friedrich Jay represented the interests of the Kingdom of Denmark in Leipzig . Soon after the seizure of power by the Nazis in 1933 Jay was forced to resign from all his posts. In the summer of 1937 Friedrich Jay settled in Vienna and died at the age of almost 79 on March 21, 1942 in Vienna.
