Pomology and horticulture

Title page of the monograph Die Pflaumen by FJ Günderrode

Von Günderrode's book Die Plums is the first monograph on plums. The work was self-published between 1804 and 1808 in 6 deliveries in octave format and contains the pomological description of a total of 36 plum varieties. The botanist and forest scientist Moritz Balthasar Borkhausen (1760–1806) is named as co-author of this work ; however, this information should be based on an error and Günderrode is the sole author.

Von Günderrode was in contact with various pomologists and exchanged ideas with these types of fruit. This is how the pomologist Thomae from Wiesbaden describes a red-striped aniseed apple (Pomme d'Anis rouge) that Adrian Diel is said to have received from von Günderrode. The pear variety Darmstädter Butterbirn is said to have come from von Günderrode to the Meiningen fruit pattern garden, from where it was further spread by Franz Jahn .

Von Günderrode was the longstanding president of the Darmstadt Horticultural Association, which was founded in 1834.
