Portrait of Franz Jahn

Franz Jahn (born January 17, 1806 in Meiningen ; † February 15, 1867 there ) was a medical adviser and pharmacist in Meiningen. He was a pomologist and editor of the Illustrirten Handbuch der Obstkunde .

Family and work

Franz Jahn was born on January 17, 1806 in Meiningen as the son of court doctor Friedrich Jahn (1766-1813). Both parents died of hospital fever in 1813 , which is why Franz Jahn grew up with his uncle, the pharmacist Karl Ludwig Jahn (1761–1835). Jahn's older brother was the doctor and rose breeder Privy Councilor Ferdinand Jahn (1804-1859).

Jahn was initially trained as a pharmacy assistant by his uncle in his pharmacy and then studied at Heinrich Wackenroder's pharmaceutical institute in Jena. After the death of his uncle in 1831, he took over his pharmacy. In 1835 he was appointed medical assessor and appointed to the medical deputation of the ducal government, to which he belonged for the rest of his life.

Franz Jahn was married to Elise Jahn, née Johannes, with whom he had twelve children, two of whom died before him. Jahn's son Herrmann Jahn was a ducal court gardener in Hildburghausen .

Franz Jahn died on February 15, 1867 of pleurisy.

Merits as a pomologist

Jahn's father had already dealt intensively with pomology and left his sons a garden with numerous fruit trees. Jahn's uncle continued to tend the garden after his brother's death, assuming that his nephews, who were interested in botany, would want to keep the garden. After the uncle's death, however, Jahn and his brother sold the garden.

Jahn's interest in pomology was only aroused later through contact with gardening inspector Buttmann, the director of the ducal court gardening department, and the steward Remde, who introduced him to the topics of fruit growing and pomology. Finally he started an orchard himself, in which he planted numerous fruit trees and raised them in his own nursery. Jahn maintained contacts with various tree nurseries specializing in fruit growing, from which he regularly obtained new varieties. He carefully checked the identity of the varieties he grew before spreading them further.

Among the pomologists in Germany, Jahn was recognized as a very good connoisseur of varieties, who had extensive pomological expertise, especially on pears and stone fruits . He acquired his knowledge of the stone fruit varieties through visits to the Jerusalem estate near Meiningen, which the Meiningen Minister of State Baron Christian Ferdinand von Koenitz had created and which had an extensive collection of cherry and plum varieties. He was also in close contact with the pharmacist Georg Liegel from Braunau, who was a recognized expert on stone fruit varieties.

Jahn suggested the establishment of the Association for Pomology and Horticulture in Meiningen in 1838, of which he was director from 1845 to 1849 and from 1851 to 1864. Until his death he was honorary director of the association, for which he prepared numerous lectures and published the association's publication. In 1856 he sold his pharmacy to devote himself entirely to his orchard and tree nursery.

From 1859 Jahn, together with Johann GC Oberdieck and Eduard Lucas, took over the editing of the Illustrirten Handbuch für Obstkunde , the publication of which had been decided in 1857 by the second meeting of pomologists in Gotha. He also contributed descriptions of the varieties, especially of pear, cherry and plum varieties, to the work.

In autumn 1862, at the request of the government, Jahn attended the international pomologists' congress in Namur , Belgium. He exhibited a range of fruit from his orchards and the ducal courtyard garden, which was honored with a club medal at the exhibition.

After Jahn's death, his orchards and tree nurseries were continued by an orcharder trained at the Reutlingen Institute for Pomology, who was supervised by his son Hermann Jahn.

Honors

For his services to pomology, he was appointed honorary member and master by the Free German Hochstift in Frankfurt in 1865. In the same year Duke Bernhard awarded him the Cross of Merit of the Duke of Saxony-Ernestine House Order .

For his services in pharmacy and medicine, he was awarded the title of Sanitätsrath by Duke Georg on October 1, 1866 .

The plum variety Jahn's Jerusalem plum , which was raised by his friend Georg Liegel, is named after Franz Jahn .
