Friedrich Körner (musicologist)

Friedrich Körner (born December 13, 1931 in Graz ) is an Austrian trumpeter, band leader and teacher.

Career

Körner studied musicology and folklore at the Karl-Franzens University Graz (doctorate 1964) as well as trumpet and accordion at the State Conservatory in Graz. He began his musical career in 1953 with the Jazz-ambitious Small Dance Orchestra of Radio Graz under Fridl Althaller, from 1956 to 1965 he was a member of the Graz Philharmonic. 1961–63 founded and directed a jazz band , the New Austrian Big Band, which formed the personal basis for the Institute for Jazz . From 1964 he was a teacher at the Academy / University for Music and Performing Arts Graz . In 1965 he founded the Institute for Jazz with Dieter Glawischnig and in 1971 the Institute for Jazz Research, of which he was director until 1992.

From 1971 to 1992 he was President of the International Society for Jazz Research. In 1972 he was appointed full professor for trumpet and jazz research at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz. Founding and leading other ensembles such as the Grazer Barocktrio (1990–96), the Swing and Musical Orchestra Graz (1986–95) or the Swingtime Quartet (from 1997). 1971–97 he was responsible for the Styrian music schools as regional music director.
