Friedrich Klemstein

Friedrich ("Fritz") Klemstein (born January 1, 1893 in Altcarbe , Friedeberg / Neumark district ; † April 20, 1945 in the Brandenburg-Görden prison ) was a German communist , worker sportsman and resistance fighter against National Socialism .

Life

Klemstein learned the trade of a locksmith and passed his master craftsman examination in 1917. Since his apprenticeship he was organized in the German Metal Workers 'Association and in the workers' sports club "Fichte" . In the First World War he served as a soldier. Since 1918 Klemstein was employed by Ludwig Loewe & Co. in Berlin-Moabit . In 1926 he was a member of the SV "Wasserpaddler Havel", later he headed the sports shop for water sports enthusiasts in Saatwinkel . Since 1930 he was a member of the combat community for red sports unit .

After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists in 1933, he and his brother Herbert were arrested and taken into " protective custody ". From 1933 to 1939 he was head of an illegal group of the Red Aid of Germany , which collected funds for families of political prisoners and was connected to the illegal sub-district Berlin-Moabit of the KPD. Then he was a member of the so-called Uhrig organization. In 1944 Gustav Wegener won him over for the Saefkow-Jacob-Bästlein organization . Klemstein set up an illegal operating cell in the Loewe company. He was involved in distributing leaflets and collecting money in the company. On September 18, 1944, Klemstein was arrested and imprisoned in Berlin-Plötzensee prison. On December 1, 1944, he was charged with "high treason" and on February 2, 1945, he was sentenced to death by the People's Court together with the lathe operator Hans Schulz and executed on April 20, 1945 in the Brandenburg-Görden prison. These were the last executions in the Brandenburg prison. Just five days later, Red Army tanks blew up the gates of the penitentiary.

Since June 2008, a stumbling block in front of his last home (Gotzkowskystraße 35) has reminded of Klemstein.
