Friedrich Koës , also Kosius or Koes , (born July 9, 1684 in Schleswig , † September 25, 1766 in Kiel ) was a German mathematician.

Live and act

Friedrich Koës was a son of Peter Koës (Koeß) (died in March 1716 in Kiel, buried on Bordesholm ) and his wife Margaretha, nee Harmens (died in December 1734 in Kiel, buried on Bordesholm). The father worked as a ducal administrator in Schleswig, from 1685 as ducal clerk in Kiel and from 1711 as councilor there.

Koës began studying at Kiel University in 1699 and later moved to Helmstedt, Halle and Leipzig, where he did not enroll. In 1703 he went back to Kiel and made trips to the Netherlands and England. In 1710 he worked as a private tutor in Berlin. In 1712 he got a job as an observer at the Berlin observatory . From 1714 he taught mathematics as a private lecturer at Kiel University, where he received his doctorate in the following year. phil. received his doctorate.

In 1719 Koës worked as a teacher for war engineering and artillery. In 1721 he followed a call as a full professor of mathematics at the University of Kiel. Here he succeeded Samuel Reyher , who was still a polyhistor . Koës, on the other hand, worked as a pure mathematician who dealt with all issues in the field. In his dissertation he already showed that he mastered the basic methods of integral calculus. Later he worked on simple differential equations and indefinite integrals, created iterative processes for the series representation of integrals, developed possibilities for the selective fixation of the solution curves of certain differential equations and was the first university professor to give lectures on differential and integral calculus in Kiel.

Koës also dealt with mathematical physics. So he examined the path of rays of light and gravity. In two written works he dealt with geometric questions, especially in the astronomical-chronological field. He had already dealt with this during his time at the Berlin observatory.

In 1727, 1735, 1743, 1755 and 1759 Koës was Vice-Rector of Kiel University.
