Friedrich Loew (born July 28, 1920 in Remscheid ; † February 8, 2018 ) was a German neurosurgeon .

Life

Friedrich Loew was the second of six children of the theologian Wilhelm Loew and his wife Elisabeth. The mother was a daughter of the liberal politician Friedrich Naumann . After the Reich Labor Service, Loew began studying medicine at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz . In 1941 Loew was drafted into the Wehrmacht and was on the Eastern Front until 1942. He gained his first experience as a paramedic and as an assistant in operations. After the state examination in autumn 1944, Loew worked in a hospital in Graz. After the end of the Second World War, he took up a position as an assistant doctor in the surgical and neurosurgical department of the Knappschaftskrankenhaus Bochum-Langendreer with Wilhelm Tönnis in June 1946 . In 1951 Loew became senior physician at the newly founded neurosurgical university clinic in Cologne . His work focused on the subject of brain research. In 1956 Loew completed his habilitation with the thesis On a Method for Recognizing the Type and Drug-Drug Impact of Post-Traumatic Cerebral Disorders . In 1960 Loew moved to the newly created department for neurosurgery at the Saarland University Hospital in Homburg and became its director in 1963. By 1990 he expanded the clinic from initially three to more than 100 beds.

From 1956 he was a member of the German Society for Neurosurgery , among other things as secretary and 1st chairman. From 1965 to 1971 he headed the department for professional issues. In 1967 he was appointed to the Scientific Advisory Board of the German Society for Anesthesia and Resuscitation. From 1968 to 1971 he was a member of the board of the German Academy of Specialists. From 1971 to 1978 he was chairman of the scientific advisory board of the German Medical Association. He was Honorary President of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS). Loew was editor-in-chief of "Acta Neurochirurgica" from 1958 to 1997.

For his scientific merits, Loew received the Ernst von Bergmann plaque in 1975 and the Wilhelm Tönnis medal in 1989 . At the 95th German Medical Congress in 1992, Loew was honored with the Paracelsus Medal .

Loew was married to Anneliese Heuser from 1944 until her death in 1993 and had three children.
