August Mayer (full name: Friedrich Ludwig August Mayer ) (born August 12, 1790 in Bärenstein ; † March 31, 1829 in Dresden ) was a German opera singer ( bass / baritone ) and opera composer in Hamburg, Kassel and Dresden.

life and work

August Mayer and his wife, an actress, were initially engaged at the Hamburg Opera and then in Kassel . Since April 1, 1819 he was engaged as an actor and first bass player in the German department of the Dresden Court Opera . His inaugural performance on April 14, 1819 was Osmin in Mozart's The Abduction from the Seraglio . On March 31, 1824, he sang the first performance of Carl Maria von Weber's Euryanthe in Dresden, her opponent Lysiart. Later he was also used here in the Italian subject. Except for a break for guest performances (from April 1 to September 30, 1823), Mayer stayed at the Court Opera until his death.

Mayer was already working as a composer in Kassel and then also offered his works by Weber in Dresden. His great opera Die Bürgschaft, based on Schiller 's ballad of the same name , was first performed in 1822 in the theater of Breslau , with Johann Theodor Mosewius as Möros, but then also in Dresden, with Mayer himself in this role. In 1826 Mayer was also in discussion in Dresden for the function of music director - as successor to Heinrich Marschner - but von Weber doubted his suitability for this post.
