Friedrich Ludwig von Medem

Friedrich Ludwig von Medem (born August 6, 1799 in Schötmar , † 1885 in Bad Homburg ; full name Friedrich Ludwig Karl Freiherr von Medem ) was a German archivist and historian .

Life

Friedrich Ludwig von Medem attended the Archigymnasium Soest and the Kadettenanstalt in Berlin. There he entered the Prussian military service, from which he resigned as a lieutenant in 1824. He studied law in Berlin from 1825 to 1827. In 1827 he went to Stettin , where he became the first full-time archivist of the newly founded Provincial Archives and worked until 1846. His first temporary position was converted into a permanent one in 1830. From 1831 to 1834 he was also the secretary of the Society for Pomeranian History and Archeology . From 1843 to 1846 Medem worked as archive secretary in the dispute at the Reich Chamber of Commerce in Wetzlar . In 1844 he was awarded the title of archivist . In 1844 he also became a corresponding member of the Society for History and Archeology of the Baltic Provinces of Russia .

Friedrich Ludwig von Medem, who during his term of office had to repeatedly take vacation for health reasons, sought his dismissal from service in 1846 because of an eye disease. In 1847 he was retired. He went to Westphalia, where he continued to deal with archiving. Medem created a private collection of historical documents. The oldest known view of the city of Münster was found in his estate, which is kept in the Homburg city archive .

Medem published various writings on the history of Pomerania , including in the Baltic Studies . From 1834 to 1836 he edited the “Journal for Archival Studies, Diplomatics and History” in two volumes with the archivists Ludwig Franz Hoefer from Berlin and Heinrich August Erhard from Münster .
