Friedrich P. Kahlenberg

Friedrich Peter Kahlenberg (born October 29, 1935 in Mainz , † July 16, 2014 in Boppard ) was a German archivist and historian .

Kahlenberg studied history, literary studies and Protestant theology at the University of Mainz . In 1963 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the Electoral Mainz military policy and the building history of the fortress Mainz in the 17th and 18th centuries, followed by his habilitation in 1970 . In 1964, he began his career as an archivist at the Federal Archives in Koblenz. From 1989 to 1999 he was President of the Federal Archives .

He sat on the advisory board of the Fritz Bauer Institute in Frankfurt am Main and was a member of the historians' commission that organized the first Wehrmacht exhibition “War of Extermination. Crimes of the Wehrmacht 1941 to 1944 ”of the Hamburg Institute for Social Research .
