Robert Emmet Barron (born November 19, 1959 in Chicago , USA ) is a Roman Catholic clergyman, university professor , publicist and auxiliary bishop in Los Angeles . He has been Professor of Systematic Theology at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake since 1992 and Rector of the affiliated Mundelein Seminary since 2012 . He has written several books, published over 180 articles on YouTube and publishes regularly in national media. Through his journalistic work he wants to strengthen the Catholic voice on popular topics in society and culture and is particularly aimed at non-believers. To support his evangelism with modern media, he founded the non-profit organization Word on Fire Catholic Ministries in 2000 .

Life

Robert Barron was born on November 19, 1959 in Chicago to a housewife and grocery sales manager and lived in Detroit and the Chicago neighborhood of Western Springs during his childhood . He has a sister and a brother John Barron, who also works in the media sector as the publisher of the Chicago Sun-Times .

Barron studied philosophy at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC , then Catholic theology at the Catholic University of St. Mary of the Lake in Chicago . Ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Chicago on May 24, 1986, he served as a chaplain in the parish of St. Paul of the Cross in Park Ridge from 1986 to 1989 . He then completed a doctorate at the Institut Catholique de Paris and was awarded a Doctor theologiae (Dr. theol.) In 1992 with his work Creation as Discipleship: A Study of the De potentia of Thomas Aquinas in Light of the Dogmatik of Paul Tillich via Thomas von Aquin . PhD .

Since 1992 he has been a professor of systematic theology in the theological faculty of the University of St. Mary of the Lake. He also teaches at numerous other universities in the United States and internationally, including as visiting professor at the University of Notre Dame in 2002 , at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in 2007, and as Scholar in Residence at the Pontifical North American from 2007 and 2010 to 2011 College .

In July 2012, Cardinal Francis George appointed him Rector of the Mundelein Seminary at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake.

On 21 July 2015 it appointed Pope Francis to the titular bishop of Macriana in Mauretania and auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles . The Archbishop of Los Angeles, José Horacio Gómez donated him and the simultaneously appointed auxiliary bishops Joseph V. Brennan and David G. O'Connell episcopal ordination on September 8 of the same year . Co- consecrators were Archbishop of Chicago , Blase Joseph Cupich , and Joseph Martin Sartoris , Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus in Los Angeles.

In addition to his native English, Robert Barron is fluent in French, Spanish, German and Latin.

Journalism

In addition to teaching at several universities, he has also published numerous books, articles, videos and films outside of the academic field. As a commentator on church and culture , he is a regular contributor to national and international media including CNN , ABC , The Chicago Tribune , NBC Nightly News , Fox News Channel , Our Sunday Visitor , Catholic Herald, and Catholic New World . He also has a Sunday radio show called Word on Fire on Relevant Radio and, since 2010, the television show Word on Fire with Father Barron on WGN America . He has been the first Catholic priest with a regular national program on a commercial television network since Archbishop Fulton John Sheen in the 1950s. Barron thematized current trends in cinema, literature, art and philosophy and referred to non-Christian authors. His personal "heroes", to whom he repeatedly refers in his lectures and contributions, include Thomas Aquinas , Thomas Merton , Bob Dylan , Abraham Lincoln , Fulton John Sheen, John Henry Newman , GK Chesterton , Dorothy Day and Flannery O. 'Connor .

In 2010 he made a documentary entitled Catholicism ( Catholicism ). The film tells the story of the Catholic Church on the basis of a journey through 16 countries, including Germany with stops in Cologne and Frankfurt am Main .
