Friedrich Preisigke

Friedrich Preisigke (born February 14, 1856 in Dessau , † February 8, 1924 in Heidelberg ) was a German postal worker and papyrologist .

Live and act

From 1877 Preisigke worked in the postal and telegraph administration. In 1896 he became the telegraph director in Berlin, and from 1904 to 1915 in Strasbourg. In between, he studied from 1899 to 1902 at the Berlin University Classical Studies and was in 1903 at the University of Halle with the work Municipal civil service in Roman Egypt Dr. phil. PhD . In 1908 Preisigke went on a study trip to Egypt and in 1913 became honorary professor for papyrus studies at the University of Strasbourg . In 1915 he moved to Heidelberg University , again as an honorary professor .

Preisigke founded several aids for papyrology that are used or continued to this day: the collective book of Greek papyrus documents from Egypt , the amendment list , which records new readings or interpretations, the dictionary of Greek papyrus documents from Egypt (continued by Emil Kießling ) and the name book . In addition, he presented several editions of papyri and ostraka .

In 1910 he received an honorary legal doctorate from the University of Heidelberg and from 1915 was a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .
