Friedrich Schirmer (born June 15, 1859 in Hohenleina ; † February 2, 1945 in Lutherstadt Wittenberg ) was Mayor of Bunzlau and Lord Mayor of Wittenberg .

Life

Friedrich Schirmer was born the son of a landowner. After studying and doing his doctorate, he embarked on a civil service career. In 1891 he became mayor of Bunzlau in Silesia. On November 29, 1894 he was introduced as mayor of Wittenberg by the district administrator of Bodenhausen. During his activity in the office, the former craftsman and garrison town of Wittenberg developed into an industrial center and its population increased by leaps and bounds. The business world also flourished and the city of Wittenberg began to expand increasingly through the construction of houses.

In 1899, Schirmer had the middle school built for boys and girls, and compulsory advanced training was introduced, which was previously in the hands of the trade association. He was also responsible for the construction of the Elstervorstadt school in 1903 and the establishment of the upper secondary school for girls in 1908. During Schirmer's time, today's Rosa Luxemburg School for girls was built in 1910 and, after lengthy negotiations, the Melanchthon Gymnasium was nationalized in 1917 .

The opening of the Reichsbank branch in Wittenberg in 1907 was important for Wittenberg's industry in the suburbs and for trade. In order to invest the money, the city bought land on Sternstrasse and Grosse Friedrichstrasse, at what is now the Old Station, and a map between Eichstrasse, Feldstrasse and Weinbergstrasse. During Schirmer's time, the construction of the electricity works fell, the gas works and the water works were enlarged and the new paving of the Sternstrasse, Grosse Friedrichstrasse (today Friedrichstrasse) and Heubnerstrasse as well as Lutherstrasse was carried out. However, it was mainly the political and economic consequences of the First World War that affected his term of office. The resulting lack of money and food etc. were the most glaring problems for the population during his term of office, so that during this time, especially urban development measures had to resign.

Due to his services to the city of Wittenberg, Schirmer was given the title of Lord Mayor by the then District President Wolf von Gersdorff in a specially organized city council meeting in the form of a certificate of appointment on August 23, 1917 .

Schirmer's request to leave after 24 years of service was granted on November 29, 1918. However, even after his service, he was still active in the committees of the city of Wittenberg. You can find him on the board of the Kaiser-Friedrich-Infirmary (today's Schleusnerstift). After the curator of the Lutherhalle Julius Jordan died in October 1928, Schirmer took over the business of a curator of the Lutherhalle in spring 1929 and continued this until the inauguration of the new curator Oskar Thulin on January 1st, 1930.
