Friedrich Warnecke was the son of a teacher. After graduating from school, he joined the Royal Hanoverian Administration and after the annexation of the country by Prussia in 1866, he was accepted into the Prussian civil service as a royal auditor. On September 29, 1869 he moved from Hanover to Berlin, where he took a position in the Prussian Ministry of Trade and Industry as a secret expeditionary secretary and calculator. Later transferred to the Ministry of Public Works, he made it up to the Privy Councilor , briefly titled Privy Councilor Warnecke. As such, it has become a term for heraldry in science and collectors .

Warnecke had already made heraldic friends in Hanover. With the professional progression to Berlin nothing came of the plan to found an association for heraldry scientists. Warnecke then founded the "Herold" association in Berlin in 1869 and, through his friend, the sculptor and heraldist Heinrich Ahrens , was the main initiator of the heraldic association "Zum Kleeblatt" in Hanover in 1888 . Warnecke was also the namesake for the latter club. The two old associations are still active to this day as recognized non-profit heraldic associations and heraldic-genealogical associations in Berlin and Hanover and carry coats of arms .

Warnecke's professional skills were not only documented in his publications, but also in his extensive art-historical collections, in which the arts and crafts had a special place. Warnecke advised his professional friends in Berlin and Hanover to focus more on the publication of important heraldic antiquities in their area. Friedrich Warnecke had many contacts, including a. to Wilhelm Busch, who became his friend.

At the beginning of November 1894 Warnecke was able to experience the 25th anniversary of his “creation” in Berlin and was also made an honorary member by the “Herold”, as he was previously an honorary member of the heraldic association “Zum Kleeblatt” in his home country. Only a few weeks later, on 25./26. November 1894, the 57-year-old succumbed to influenza .
