Friedrich Weber (born September 10, 1813 in Liestal , † February 17, 1882 in Basel ) was a Swiss engraver .

life and work

Friedrich Weber attended school in Liestal. In the spring of 1828 he began an apprenticeship with the engraver François-Jacques Oberthür in Strasbourg , which was completed in 1832. From October 1832 to 1835 he continued his education with Carl Ludwig Frommel in Karlsruhe and at the Academy in Munich. In this way he also acquired the technique of steel engraving . His most successful sheet ( Elisabeth ) came in 1836. From 1840 to 1859 he lived and worked in Paris . There he became a pupil of Paul Delaroche in 1841 and of François Forster in 1843 .

Weber founded the first German choral society in Paris in 1846. He was also regarded as a flautist. For his engraving Napoleon and his son , created in 1845 , he received the gold medal at the Paris Salon in 1847 . In Brussels , at the art exhibition in 1851, he received an award for Italian at the fountain . In the summer of 1852 he married Elisabeth Bischoff from Basel. In 1859 he settled in Basel and made numerous portraits of local personalities as well as engravings after paintings from the Basel public art collection .

He became a member of the Basel Art Commission and an honorary member of the Art Association and the Historical Society. In 1861 he was awarded the Golden Medal for Art by the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin . From the spring of 1874 he belonged to her as a foreign member. He was also a member of the Paris and Geneva academies. In addition, from 1878 he was an honorary member of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna .

Friedrich Weber was one of the most famous engravers of his time. He specialized in portraits , book illustrations and transferring paintings by other artists.
