Friedrich Wilhelm Thümmel (born May 6, 1856 in Barmen (now part of Wuppertal ), † August 9, 1928 in Jena ) was a German Protestant theologian.

Life

Thümmel was the son of pastor Ernst Hermann Thümmel (1815-1887). He attended high school in his hometown, where he graduated from high school in 1874. In the same year he began studying theology at the University of Bonn and continued this until 1879 at the University of Leipzig . In 1879 he was assistant preacher in Geldern, later in Lohne near Soest . In 1881 he became pastor in Geldern and in 1884 in Remscheid . During his time in Remscheid he attacked the Catholic Church sharply on questions of transubstantiation , for which he was sentenced to three weeks in prison on the basis of the German criminal code § 166. Thereupon he published the sharp justification letter Rheinische Richter und Roman Priester (1887, 2nd edition. 1888), for which he again received a sentence from the Kassel regional court . As a result of a lecture at a meeting of the Evangelical Federation in a Protestant church in Solingen about the Aachen Shrine Tour that took place in 1888, the meeting was dissolved. In 1893 he earned with the work to assess the Donatism the licentiate in theology at the University of Halle-Wittenberg .

After he had published the book Answer to the Papal Priesthood in Breslau (1894) the following year , this caused a new hearing, where he was acquitted in 1898. Therefore, he resigned from the office in Remscheid and completed his habilitation in 1900 at the University of Berlin for theological homiletics and catechetics . In 1901 he was appointed associate professor for practical theology at the University of Jena and in 1903 he became a full professor of the subject and director of the homiletic and catechetical seminar. In 1915/16 he was rector of Salana and in 1919 he became president of the Thuringian regional church .

Thümmel is counted among the exposed representatives of the Evangelical Union . Since 1874 he was a member of the Alemannia Bonn fraternity . A painting of him is kept in the custodian treasure of the University of Jena.
