Friedrich Wilhelm von Schaeffer

Friedrich Wilhelm von Schaeffer (born August 3, 1839 in Magdeburg , † June 17, 1916 in Nöbdenitz ) was a royal Prussian major general and most recently commander of the 59th Infantry Brigade.

His parents were the major a. D. Heinrich Auguste Friedrich von Schaeffer (* January 17, 1799 - July 12, 1869) and his wife Cäcilie von Mandelsloh (* 1808 - August 3, 1878).

Life

He received his education at the high school in Wehlau. He then went to Bensberg as a cadet on May 3, 1853, and from there to Berlin as a cadet on May 1, 1855 . After graduating, he came to the 32nd Infantry Regiment on May 2, 1857 with the character of Portepeefähnrich. On January 9, 1858, he received his patent as a portepeef ensign and on December 24, 1858 he was promoted to second lieutenant. From October 11, 1864 to August 11, 1865, he was assigned to the Prussian command in Mainz fortress . During the German War he was with the Main Army, where he was promoted to Premier-Lieutenant on July 20, 1866.

During the Franco-German War he fought at Weißenburg , Wörth , Sedan , Orleans and Beaugency-Cravant as well as the siege of Paris . He also fought in the skirmishes at Artenay, Chateaudun, Chartres, Chateauneuf, Bretoncelles, Alencon and Courville. For this he received the Iron Cross 2nd Class on September 16, 1870 .

After the war, he was appointed captain and company commander in the 32nd Infantry Regiment on December 14, 1871. On March 12, 1878, he moved to the 95th Infantry Regiment and was promoted to major on February 13, 1883. Then he came on February 19, 1885 in the 115th Infantry Regiment, where he was commander of the 1st Battalion. On May 22, 1889, he returned to the 32nd Infantry Regiment as a lieutenant colonel and regular staff officer. On August 22, 1891 he was promoted to colonel and aggregated into the 57th Infantry Regiment . On October 18, 1891, he was appointed commander of the 57th Infantry Regiment. On January 20, 1895, he was awarded the Crown Order, 2nd Class with Oak Leaves, and on August 18, 1895, he was transferred to the 59th Infantry Brigade as Major General and Commander. There he received the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd Class with Oak Leaves, on January 18, 1897 . He was put up for retirement on August 18, 1897 and awarded the star for the Order of the Crown.

He died on June 17, 1916 in Nöbdenitz (Saxony-Anhalt) and was buried on June 20, 1916 in the military cemetery in Hasenheide.

Schaeffer married Freiin Liddy Hedwig Margarete von Thümmler on August 22, 1863 in Kospoda (* February 12, 1844, † July 12, 1924). The couple had several children:
