Friedrich Wotke

Friedrich Wotke (born November 2, 1893 in Oberhollabrunn , † September 19, 1960 in Vienna ) was an Austrian classical philologist and high school teacher.

Life

Friedrich Wotke, the son of the classical philologist and grammar school teacher Karl Wotke (1861–1929), studied classical philology (together with Gertrud Herzog-Hauser ) and English at the University of Vienna . After his service in the First World War , he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD . His (unprinted) dissertation dealt with rhetorical influences on the second book of the Aristotelian Oeconomica .

After the teaching exams in Latin, Greek and English, Wotke taught at the grammar school in Vienna V, later at the secondary school in Vienna XV. From 1949 until his retirement in 1959 he was director of the Vienna VI high school.

In addition to the school service, Wotke was active in research. He wrote essays, lexicon articles (for Pauly's real encyclopedia of classical antiquity ) and reviews, especially on ancient Christian writers and the reception of antiquity in the Middle Ages and humanism . He also published the magazines Litterae Humaniores and Wiener humanistische Blätter as well as school editions by Latin authors.

Wotke died as a result of a car accident.
