SonuVab! Tch is a rock band founded in Rostock in 2009 . Their music style is shaped by bands of the commercially successful Nu-Metal wave, which reached its peak in 2000.

The band released their debut album Holiday Heart Syndrome in 2013 on the Tubareckorz label , distributed by Nuclear Blast .

Band name

The name of the band is based on the book The Catcher in the Rye by the American writer Jerome David Salinger , which the members of the band read as part of their English lessons. It describes the three-day odyssey of 16-year-old boarding school student Holden Caulfield , tormented by self-doubt, agitated between rebellion and frustration, wandering through wintry Manhattan . The protagonist uses an extremely aggressive vocabulary in his remarks, including the term Sonuvabitch, short for Son of a Bitch and, freely translated, synonymous with the German swear word son of a bitch . Despite the provocative translation, the band agreed on this phrase in their founding phase. The same message and spirituality that Salinger expressively transports in his work should also be captured in their music and their lyrics.

Band formation

The band consists of the five members Tobias Horstmann, Lucas Bartels, Georg Salomon, Lennart Münchow and Johann Knoche. The people were already familiar from many music projects and played with each other in changing line-ups, including the metal bands Core of Destruction and Limit Break , which quickly achieved regional fame. With the end of their school career, however, these music formations also ended. In autumn 2009 the remaining former members founded their new music project under the name SonuVab! Tch . One of the band's distinguishing features is the physical limitations of their singer, Tobias Horstmann. He was born with only one arm.

style

The band uses the classical music elements of their role models in order to build bridges between the respective genres. In their songs they combine common hip-hop elements with concise guitar parts as well as screams of the metal segment with conventional pop elements. Her lyrics are exclusively in English and the content is shaped by the youth experiences of the five musicians. These grew up in the rural part of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and some of them were victims of right-wing violence there. These experiences can be found fragmentarily in her song, for example in Courage, which addresses the moral courage of German citizens. However, even more banal topics are processed self-ironically.

Career

Unleash The Beast

The band was founded in 2009 and their first appearances followed in the summer of 2010, when the first EP Unleash The Beast was released , which contained four tracks. It was realized in cooperation with the renowned musician Jonas Wolter , who supported the band in terms of both recording and songwriting. The EP was published in an edition of 500 copies and was completely sold out within weeks.

Many other concerts followed, some in the tour program of well-known artists such as Tim Bendzko , the Donots or Third Choice , smaller tours and festival appearances throughout Germany as well as concerts at trade fairs such as the Frankfurt Music Fair or the International Radio Exhibition , which was also reported by TV Spielfilm magazine.

Right end of the line

The band is also involved in social projects, gave concerts in integrative schools, workshops for the disabled, discussion forums and in the Bützow correctional facility. In addition, they stand up against violence in any form and in the course of it became winners of the Storch-Heinar band contest. This fashion brand is the satirical answer of Jusos Mecklenburg-Vorpommern to the clothing brand Thor Steinar , which is considered a symbol of recognition for the right-wing extremist and neo-Nazi scene. The victory in this competition paved the way for the band in events of the end station right - an initiative of the SPD Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania - under the patronage of Mathias Brodkorbs . The award was presented to them by the comedian Olaf Schubert at the M.AU Club in Rostock . As a result, SonuVab! Tch performed in front of more than 10,000 people at the Endstation-Rechts-Festival in Schwerin with artists such as Polarkreis 18 , Jenix or Luxuslärm . In addition, four of her songs were on the Storchkraft Schulhof CD , which, under the direction of the SPD state parliament politician Julian Barlen , was released in response to the distribution of CDs in schoolyards by the NPD . More than 10,000 copies of the Storchkraft Schulhof CD were pressed and distributed throughout Germany.

Festivals

With increasing awareness, the number of concerts of the band also grew. Since the existence of more than 100 gigs were completed in Germany, both at festivals as well as other performances in the opening act known bands such as Main Point , the harbingers , Crushing Caspar , The Apocalyptic Riders (band) , Ragnaröek etc.

Band competitions

The band has won a large number of competitions. In addition to the above-mentioned victory in the Storch-Heinar band contest, Sonuvabitch were also Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's state winners in the global Emergenza Contest and represented their state at the Germany finals in Berlin's Astra-Kulturhaus, they were finalists in the most established musicians' competition in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the state rock festival MV, as well First finalist in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the international Schooljam band contest . Supported by prominent patrons such as Spiegel Online , Last.fm or VIVA Germany, this competition is the largest school band competition in Germany. More than 1600 bands take part annually. In the eleven-year history of the competition, SonuVab! Tch is the only band in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania that was able to prevail against the schools in the larger federal states. They played at the Musikmesse Frankfurt , which attracts more than 80,000 visitors annually, with bands such as Stereolove , the successor to Reamonn , Roman Lob and Frida Gold in the Festhalle (Frankfurt am Main) . In the final, the band competed against the seven competitors from the other federal states. The jury, made up of producers, organizers and musicians, e.g. B. Dennis Poschwatta, drummer of the Guano Apes, however, did not convince.

Music videos

The band designed their own music videos for a large number of their songs. It acts completely self-sufficient. From the script to the shoot itself to the editing of the video, nothing is done by outside workers; everything is done by the band itself.

Alive - 2011

The band understands this song as an appeal to all musicians of larger format to get back down to earth. It is a rebellion against common rock star clichés and stereotypes, implemented in relaxed musicality with a common melody, swinging rap parts and simple basic chords. In the video, the band lives through their everyday life, which is sometimes exaggerated. In the course of the action, they meet in the band's rehearsal room, set up their equipment and give a concert in front of friends and a down-to-earth backdrop in the evening. The song was also released, in a modified form, on the debut album Holiday Heart Syndrome . The extras in this video were taken on by school friends, including the camera work during the live performance. Hannes Wichmann took over and supported the band on many other projects.

Courage - 2012

In the course of the wave of violent attacks on train stations in major German cities and based on experiences with right-wing extremist violence in their youth, the band conceived a song that should be understood as an appeal to the civil courage of German citizens. In terms of content, the song depicts a brutal attack on a defenseless person. This is observed by an unknown person, who, however, motionless, unable to make a decision that makes the act of violence happen. Years later, this stranger also falls victim to the violent attackers. In the verses of the song the band lets the listener live through the gruesome plot, while in the chorus they repeatedly appeal to him to intervene and not watch. Musically, the song is carried by hard guitar riffs; Metal elements like breakdowns and guttural vocals are combined with spherical elements like piano sounds and whispers. The video simulates the action in dark images. The protagonist witnesses an act of violence that paralyzes and paralyzes him. While he moves indifferently through gloomy corridors, the performance of the band is shown in fast pictures. In the last third of the video, the band and the main actor meet, who finally gets rid of his crippling chains and confronts the masked tormentors.

Another Fake - 2013

The band's third video is the musical implementation of a love story that happened to a band member. Unlike in her two previous works, the focus in this video is not on the band members, but on two main actors, a student couple. In the video, the viewer witnesses the two suddenly come together. The band placed itself humorous in the storylines and loosened up the action with short performance parts. The main female character arrives at the protagonist's party. At this celebration, SonuVab! Tch also makes an appearance and during this time the two main characters come together. When the protagonist finds his bed abandoned the next morning, however, he begins to ravage his room in a rage. When he finally storms out of the house, his female counterpart comes towards him smiling with a bag of bread rolls and kisses him. The song is run through by rhythms and melodies from pop music, but occasionally comes up with parts and structures of nu-metal music. Like its predecessors, the music video was published on the band's YouTube channel.

Holiday Heart Syndrome

The band's debut album was released in October 2013 on the Tubareckorz label and is distributed by Nuclear Blast .

Name derivation

The name of the album is derived from the holiday heart syndrome ( cardiac arrhythmia after excessive alcohol consumption). This had been attested to the singer of the band, Georg Salomon, by his doctor during his military service in the armed forces. The band wanted to realize these symptoms with their debut album, which is why the medical term was chosen as the album title.

financing

In the middle of 2012, the band made the decision to publish the songs they had written to date in the form of an album. Since the band was not yet under contract with any label at that time, it was decided to implement this through a new type of financing system. SonuVab! Tch combined elements of crowdfunding with known functions of sponsoring to create a more extensive concept. On the one hand, they enabled their fans to secure a copy of the emerging album in advance. The price for this was half of the planned sales price of the album, for which the fans received the finished CD, along with fan items such as autograph cards, stickers and thanks after the album was released. On the other hand, the band wrote to companies in their region and offered to secure a part of the album booklet for a sum of money on which the companies could place their advertising. In this way, the band was able to secure more than € 10,000 for the implementation of their album.

Recording

Holiday Heart Syndrome was then recorded in several session phases in the Pete Musik recording studio in Rostock. The album has twelve songs and an introtrack. Both the music and the lyrics come exclusively from the five band members. After the recordings were completed, the songs were mastered and revised by Jens Quandt in the Snowland studios . There SonuVab! Tch were discovered by the band Knorkator , who also worked in the studio. They were promptly recorded and released on the band's own label, Tubareckorz . Harald Wehmeier , long-time editor of Norddeutscher Rundfunk, plays a special role in the design of the album. Wehmeier, creator of the Stenkelfeld radio plays and the radio series Breakfast at Stefanie , awarded the German Radio Prize 2011, speaks the introduction to the song Whatever You Say in the album's intro . He mimes one of his most prominent roles, Grandpa Gehrke, the radio series Breakfast with Stefanie, who makes fun of the name of the band.
