Breakfast at Stefanie's was a radio comedy series broadcast in 1066 episodes from 2008 to 2013 by Norddeutscher Rundfunk about the fictional “Schlemmer bistro ” by Stefanie and her three guests. The title is an allusion to the 1958 short novel Breakfast at Tiffany's by Truman Capote , which was successfully filmed in 1961 with Audrey Hepburn in the lead role . The opening music of the series is reminiscent of the Breakfast at Tiffany's film score Moon River .

People, content and style

In the program, four everyday characters discussed the issues of the time in a fictional little gourmet bistro in northern Germany over coffee and meat rolls . Apart from Stefanie Prigge (called Steffi, after her wedding Stefanie Prigge-Felbe; * October 30, 1966), the owner of the bistro with a high table, there were regular performances:

  • the know-it-all and early retired post office clerk Georg Ahlers (born February 4, 1945),
  • the unemployed professional scrounger and life artist Udo Martens (born November 23, 1965), who still lives with his mother, and
  • the hard-of-hearing pensioner (since 1981) and senior Casanova Franz "Grandpa" Gehrke (born June 15, 1916), who lives according to the motto "Everything was better in the past!"

Always there was also Steffi's dog Rocky - a "holiday souvenir" from 2001 from an animal shelter in Málaga - who mostly sat in a bomber jacket in front of or on the counter and was fed by Steffi with cream cheese corners and Mon Chéri - previously also with meatbread rolls .

Steffi is a big fan u. a. from Flippers , Andrea Berg , Kai Pflaume and Jörg Pilawa .

The episodes usually began with the introduction of the four protagonists Stefanie ("Es eat 'ja like's eat'"), Herr Ahlers ("Yes, that doesn't matter"), Udo ("Joah ... that can be ham! ") And Grandpa Gehrke (" Steffi, make me a Mettbrötchen? "). To Grandpa Gehrke's question, Steffi almost always replied: “No, I have to lubricate first. You take milk and sugar yourself, right ?! - What's new? ”With that, the current daily topics were dealt with briefly, with all four contributing their rich life experiences. The dry north German comments, the humorous misunderstandings, the naive and stupid talking past one another and the hearty humor of all those involved were characteristic of the discussion. Most of the time, however, the four came to an agreement after a heated discussion. This was often documented with the saying “Because we have it!”.

At the end of each episode , Georg Ahler's grandpa usually asked Gehrke: “Riddle finished, Franz?” It was always a question from Gehrke's crossword puzzle . After Grandpa Gehrke passed on a typical crossword question (e.g. "Aromatic drink with 3 letters?"), The bistro owner Stefanie usually gave an apparently appropriate answer. A running gag was that a wrong answer was always given and varied in many ways (in the example: “rum” instead of “tea”) or an answer that amused the listener in a different way (question from Grandpa Gehrke: “opposite from behind with 5 letters? After the four of them had their last breakfast together in Stefanie's gourmet bistro, Grandpa Gehrke announced that he had now completed his crossword puzzle, whereupon Mr. Ahlers noticed that Franz had been dealing with one and the same puzzle for five years, according to Franz, a jumbo- Puzzles on a double page. The animations were designed by the Hamburg comic artist Piero Masztalerz . The total of 626 episodes were produced by Studio HD Entertainment in Hanover. The cartoon episodes were also available as videos on the Internet.

On April 2, 2011, the four characters were guests on the show Funtastic Saturday and commented on the songs played. On April 28, 2012 NDR 2 broadcast four hours with the voices of Steffi, Udo, Georg and Grandpa Franz - spoken live by Andreas Altenburg and Harald Wehmeier - from a real discotheque in Seevetal near Hamburg. All tickets for the event Midnight - Hitnight from Steffi's favorite disco were raffled. In 2013 the comedy series Breakfast at Stefanie came to an end, as author and speaker Harald Wehmeier left the NDR as a permanent editor, which the broadcaster announced on March 20, 2013. Authors and speakers

The broadcast comes from the NDR-2 editors Andreas Altenburg ( Who beeps there ? , Detzer & Nelling ) and Harald Wehmeier ( News from Stenkelfeld , Münte aktuell ). The four roles were spoken by Altenburg (Steffi, Udo) and Wehmeier (Mr. Ahlers, Grandpa Gehrke) on individual sound tracks and then edited by a technician for the conversation. The only voice that was changed in pitch was Stefanie's.

During this time, the four protagonists went on vacation together more often: in 2010 this was a bus trip to the Costa Brava , which Grandpa Gehrke won in a crossword puzzle, and in 2011 the four drove together to the Europa Park in Rust . The journeys can be heard as radio plays on the second and third CD in the series as a bonus.

On the occasion of the severe earthquake in Japan and the subsequent nuclear disaster in Fukushima , no program was broadcast from March 14th to 18th, 2011.

Before the Christmas break in 2012, Udo was banned from the house by Steffi because of the chaos he had caused in the bistro, after she had commissioned Udo to run the bistro while she and her new friend Volker Röhse attended a performance of the musical Rocky in Hamburg. The next episodes were broadcast first without Udo's voice, then without that of Grandpa Franz, who left the bistro out of sympathy for Udo. In the last episode in the old year there was a reconciliation between Stefanie and all bistro visitors. No new episodes aired from December 24, 2012 to January 4, 2013.

Awards

On September 8, 2011, Andreas Altenburg and Harald Wehmeier received the German Radio Prize in the “Best Comedy” category for breakfast with Stefanie .
