Nicholas Baines , called Nick (born November 13, 1957 in Liverpool ) was Bishop of Bradford in the Church of England from 2011 to 2014 and has been Bishop of the newly created Diocese of Leeds since February 2014 . He has also been a member of the House of Lords since 2014 .

Life

Baines attended the Holt Comprehensive School in Liverpool. He studied German and French at the University of Bradford and graduated with a Bachelor with Honors (BA (Hons)). He then worked as a language expert at GCHQ for four years before choosing to serve in the Church and study theology at Trinity College in Bristol. There he obtained a bachelor's degree with honors (BA (Hons)) in theology .

Baines was ordained a deacon in 1987 and a priest in the Church of England in 1988 . His first position was as a curate at St Thomas' Kendal and St Catherine's Crook, Cumbria . He then moved to Leicester , where he was temporarily assistant pastor at Holy Trinity, Leicester, and then Vicar von Rothley (1992-2000). During this time he was also the pastor of a psychiatric institution for adults. In 1995 he became the Rural Dean of Goscote. In 2000 he became Archdeacon of Lambeth in the Diocese of Southwark. He was responsible for the diocese's child and youth work and was a member of the General Synod of the Church of England from 1995 to 2005. In 2003 he was called to be Regional Bishop of Croydon in the Diocese of Southwark. He became the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams in St Paul's Cathedral consecrated bishop on 8 May 2003 in Southwark Cathedral inserted into his office.

In 2011 he was called to succeed David Charles James as Diocesan Bishop of Bradford. In the course of the amalgamation of the Dioceses of Bradford, Ripon and Leeds and Wakefield, Baines was appointed first diocesan bishop of the new Diocese of Leeds (entitled "Bishop of West Yorkshire and the Dales") on February 4, 2014, which comprises the regions of West Yorkshire and the Includes Yorkshire Dales . He took office on Easter Sunday 2014. His election was officially confirmed on June 8, 2014.

Nicholas Baines has been married since 1980. He and his wife have three children.

Baines has a wealth of media experience and can often be heard on BBC Radio 2's Pause for Thought radio show . Two of his books have been translated into German. Bishop Baines is a regular guest at church conventions and in 2013 gave the sermon at the closing service of the German Evangelical Church Convention in 2013 .

In 2014 he received an honorary doctorate from the Theological Faculty of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena .

On December 3, 2014, Baines was inducted into the House of Lords as a spiritual lord in his capacity as former Bishop of Bradford and current Bishop of Leeds . He took the place of the Bishop of Gloucester Michael Francis Perham .
