Public statements

In 2003, James had massively countered allegations within the Church that there was violence against women within the clergy and that husbands beat their wives. He could not imagine that his fellow ministers, whom he had met all over the world, would beat their wives. He wouldn't do that himself either. Rather, he loves his wife, who actively supports him in his work.

In the same year he signed an open letter as one of 17 Bishops in the Church of England who rejected the nomination of Jeffrey John , an openly gay priest who was committed, as Auxiliary Bishop of Reading .

In July 2006, he was part of a group of bishops who warned Tony Blair against possession of nuclear weapons . These would be vicious and deeply against God.

On October 7, 2008, James was among the signatories of a declaration calling for the protection of children from emotional and physical violence.

In June 2009, the Bishop of expressed Newcastle , Paul Richardson to the fact that the decline in church attendance would show that the UK is not a Christian country more. James said that the Church is well aware of the challenge it faces, but that there are certainly signs of hope. The church is always a generation from extinction. Many bishops and denominations are aware of this and will respond to it. Many young people today prefer modern forms of worship; the number of adult baptisms would also increase.

In the summer of 2008, James granted humanitarian asylum to a mother and her two children in his own home . James feared that the woman who had come to the UK as an immigrant might commit suicide out of desperation in order to secure the right of residence in the UK for her children aged 7 and 8.

Immigration officials said they refrained from arrest simply because James was Bishop of Bradford.
