Life

Friedrich was the son of Prince Wilhelm zu Wied (1845–1907) and Princess Marie von Oranien-Nassau, Princess of the Netherlands (1841–1910), a granddaughter of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III. and by Wilhelm I of Nassau , King of the Netherlands. During his studies at the University of Bonn he was from 1897 to 1898 CK with the Corps Borussia Bonn , which awarded him the Corpsschleife in 1922 . In 1907 he succeeded his late father as the reigning prince of the reign of Wied.

Hereditary Prince Friedrich zu Wied married Princess Pauline (1877-1965) , the only surviving child of the last King of Württemberg, Wilhelm II of Württemberg (1848-1921) and Princess Marie zu Waldeck and Pyrmont , on October 29, 1898 in Stuttgart . He became an officer à la suite of the "König" (2nd Württemberg) Dragoon Regiment No. 26 , temporarily with the Olga Dragoons . After the marriage, the couple initially lived in Potsdam because Friedrich was in command there, and in 1902 they moved to Berlin . In 1907 they moved to the Neuwied residence because Friedrich had become Prince of Wied after the death of his father. In 1908 he took over the protectorate of the Rheinischer Schützenbund , which his father had already held.

During the First World War he served a. a. as a colonel in the high command of the " Army Group Linsingen " and was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of the Württemberg Crown with Swords by King Wilhelm II on October 5, 1916 .
