Fritz Grossmann

Fritz Grossmann (born June 26, 1902 in Stanislau , Galicia , † November 16, 1984 in Croydon , London ) was an Austro-British art historian .

Life

Fritz Grossmann was the son of the military doctor Maximilian Großmann (born January 13, 1869 in Stredokluk near Prague; † February 22, 1941 in Vienna-Landstrasse). He attended the state high school in Vienna III. District up to high school graduation. He then studied at the University of Vienna , first law, then art history and modern German philology. In 1930 he received his doctorate under Josef Strzygowski . He then worked as a freelancer in the cultural sector in Vienna, but as a Jew he could not find a permanent job. After the “Anschluss” of Austria , he emigrated to London in December 1938, where he became Ludwig Burchard's assistant . He also worked closely with the collector Antoine Seilern , whom he knew from his school days in Vienna. From 1961 until his retirement in 1966 he worked at the Manchester City Art Gallery . From 1966 to 1972 he taught as a professor of art history at the University of Washington in Seattle .

His research was mainly applied to Holbein and Bruegel .
