Life

Hausjell, who grew up on a farm, studied journalism and communication sciences as well as education at the University of Salzburg and the University of Vienna . In 1985 he received his doctorate as Dr. phil., he completed his habilitation in 2003 . He is currently an associate professor at the Institute for Communication Studies at the University of Vienna. He is a member of the Association of Social Democratic Academics (BSA).

Hausjell's preferred research areas are journalism in the Third Reich and its aftermath. Relevant publications by Hausjell are, for example, the books “The misappropriated truth. Hitler's Propagandists in Austria's Media ”, 1988; “Journalists against Democracy or Fascism” 1989; and “The Fourth Power. On the history and culture of journalism in Austria since 1945 ”, 1991.

The areas of journalism in exile, the development of journalism in the Second Republic, neo-Nazism and racism in the media context, migration and media are also among Hausjell's areas of work, whereby the researcher is not afraid to take positions that are prone to conflict (for example, he opposes the naming of a possible migration background at the media coverage of crimes).

criticism

On May 18, 2014 it was announced that Fritz Hausjell would be appointed by the SPÖ as the successor to the suddenly deceased Hannes Haas on the Public Value Advisory Board. The ÖVP, however, lies across. Due to his membership in the BSA, he is unsuitable as an expert for this media-politically sensitive body. In the Public Value Advisory Board, Hausjell would have influence on what ORF as a provider is allowed to do and what is not. In addition, Hausjell, who has already written several studies for ORF, lacks any critical distance from ORF. "He is considered a reliable advocate for the ORF concerns - from the fee reimbursement to the budget charge to the defense against criticism of the ORF commercialization," writes "Die Presse". Hausjell also stepped into the breach for Alexander Wrabetz in the politically sensitive debate about the planned engagement of Niko Pelinka as office manager of the ORF general - and described the critical reporting in the print media on the cause as "propaganda".
