Fritz Richter-Elsner

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fritz Richter-Elsner (born January 8, 1884 in Köppelsdorf , † 1970 in Detmold ) was a German sculptor .

Life

Born in Köppelsdorf in Thuringia in 1884, he studied with Reinhard Möller at the Sonneberg School of Industry and Applied Arts and then in Munich . From 1905 to 1916, at the age of 21, he was artistic director of the Oscar Gladenbeck & Co. foundry in Berlin-Friedrichshagen . He lived for many years in Berlin-Friedrichshagen, where he left evidence of his work with sculptures in the cemetery and a memorial for the Jewish doctor Max Jacoby (now destroyed).

From the 1920s Richter-Elsner switched to the design of monuments.

In the mid-1930s he ran into financial difficulties. In a corresponding correspondence, he mentions his wife (Charlotte née Koch † 2019) and his three children.

In March 1943 at the latest, Richter-Elsner was assigned to work and was only able to take care of the sculpting jobs in his free time. In April 1943 he lived in Goldberg, Hermann-Göring-Straße 1. From there, after the end of the war, he managed to escape to Alsfeld in Upper Hesse via Thuringia.

Richter-Elsner's artistic output decreased significantly after the " seizure of power ". With his signature on June 4, 1937, he became a member of the NSDAP under the number 3933995 . In 1943, however, he was posted to work. It is difficult to determine today whether this is due to personal economic difficulties or whether he was not loyal to the line.

As an artist, Richter-Elsner could no longer gain a foothold in post-war Germany. Its formal language corresponded too closely to the art promoted by the Nazis and large war memorials were no longer in demand. One of his last known works is a bust of Gerhart Hauptmann, which is now owned by the Gerhart-Hauptmann School in Alsfeld. Fritz Richter-Elsner died in Detmold in 1970.
