Fritz Riemann (chess player)

Fritz Riemann (born January 2, 1859 in Polish Weistritz, Schweidnitz district , † November 22, 1932 in Erfurt ) was a German chess master .

Riemann, an Anderssen student and a city councilor by profession, had his most successful phase as a chess master in the 1880s. At the congress of the West German Chess Federation in Braunschweig in 1880, he was second behind Louis Paulsen . In Leipzig he won in 1888 together with Curt von Bardeleben before Siegbert Tarrasch among others . Riemann, who lived in Breslau for a while , then in Berlin before moving to Erfurt , defeated Arnold Schottländer in a competition 5-0 in Breslau in 1876 ; in 1880 he played 3: 3 (+2 = 2 −2) against Emil Schallopp in Berlin . In 1885 a match against Ernst Flechsig in Breslau ended with 5: 5 (+5 = 0 −5). As early as 1889, at the age of 30, Riemann withdrew from tournament chess , but remained associated with the German Chess Federation (DSB) throughout his life .

Riemann wrote a book about his chess career with memories of Adolf Anderssen: Chess memories of the youngest Anderssen student , Berlin / Leipzig 1925.

The best historical rating was subsequently determined to be 2632 (March 1889). For some time he was one of the ten best chess players in the world.
