Fritz Schumann (journalist)

Fritz Schumann (born December 30, 1987 in Berlin ) is a German journalist , director and author . He specializes in the country of Japan .

Life

Fritz Schumann was born on December 30, 1987 in East Berlin, the son of the journalist and publisher Frank Schumann and the educator Helga Schumann. Between 2000 and 2007 he attended the John-Lennon-Gymnasium in Berlin-Mitte , where he founded the JLG film festival and organized it until 2008.

journalism

From 2007 he worked as a freelance author and photographer for the youth website of the Berliner Zeitung . Between July 2009 and July 2010 Fritz Schumann lived on a working holiday visa in Tokyo , Japan and worked from there as a freelance foreign correspondent a. a. for the Berliner Zeitung and the manga magazine Daisuki . In the following years he visited the country at least once a year for research. In 2011 he began to study photojournalism and documentary photography at the University of Hanover . Between 2013 and 2014 he spent two semesters at Hiroshima City University. He completed his studies in Hanover in January 2018 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts .

His contributions from Japan have appeared in Spiegel, National Geographic and Stern, among others, have been shown on television and shown at international film festivals. For his research on the poison gas factory on the island of Ōkunoshima , he received a grant from the Robert Bosch Foundation and the Berlin Literary Colloquium in 2018 as part of the “Grenzgänger” program. Fritz Schumann lives and works in Berlin.

"In the valley of the dolls"

In November 2013, Fritz Schumann traveled to the village of Nagoro in Tokushima Prefecture , which was known locally as the “ Puppet Village ” or “Village of Scarecrows”. He produced a short documentary film about the doll maker Ayano Tsukimi, which he posted online in April 2014 and which then went viral. It was the first post about Nagoro outside of Japan, and the media reports it triggered led to an increase in overseas tourism in the area. Fritz Schumann was interviewed several times by Japanese television, as well as by BBC Radio and Deutschlandradio. In the same year “In the Valley of the Puppets” was awarded the dpa Newstalent.

At the end of the 30 year long heisei era and the beginning of the reiwa era , the Japanese broadcaster NHK broadcast a special program. a. the topic was: “How foreigners shaped the heisei era.” The film “In the Valley of the Puppets” and the interview with Fritz Schumann were cited as examples of the lasting change in Japan by foreigners in the last 30 years.
