The John-Lennon-Gymnasium is a high school in the Berlin district of Mitte .

history

The building has been used by the 153rd boys 'and 154th girls' schools since 1885. The school name changed several times. Since the beginning of the 1960s, 5th secondary school, in 1976 it was named after the former SPD chairman August Bebel (1840-1913). After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the former "August Bebel High School" was renamed in 1994 under the motto "Beatle instead of Bebel" after the musician John Lennon . The unusual naming was largely enforced by student and parent representatives against the teaching staff.

school-building

The four-storey, three-wing brick building was designed in 1884/85 by Hermann Blankenstein in the style of academic historicism . The central wing was destroyed in the Second World War . In 1951/52 the war damage was repaired, in the 1990s the buildings and outdoor facilities were renovated, modernized and redesigned. The building is a historical monument.

particularities

The naming of the school after John Lennon is unique in Germany and has attracted national attention. Permission to use the name was obtained from Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono .

The school profile of the John-Lennon-Gymnasium is determined by three values: performance, cosmopolitanism and a friendly learning environment. A subject-related focus is deliberately avoided.

The school has received the award “ Environmental School in Europe - International Agenda School” for its commitment to environmental and climate protection . In addition, it was recognized by UNESCO as an official project of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development .

The school management also introduced a self-developed evaluation system for teaching staff based on the model of the British partner schools . From the 7th grade as well as in the upper school courses, questionnaires for evaluating the teachers are handed out at the end of the school year. High school graduates are also interviewed after their exams.

The John Lennon High School has been participating in school inspections voluntarily since 2006 and is among the 19 institutions in the top group with good or very good quality among the 160 schools inspected.

In 2009, the high school made headlines because the students voted on whether lessons should take place at 9 a.m. in the winter months. The majority were in favor of keeping the normal course starting at 8 a.m.

The school participates in the Berlin program for in-depth professional orientation (BvBO) and offers its students support in professional orientation and career choice.

Exchange programs

The John Lennon High School has partner schools in Great Britain, Spain, France and the USA and organizes student exchanges with France. In the 11th grade, the school also supports its students' long-term stays abroad.
