The player, who was used alternately as an outside runner and a middle runner in the then predominantly practiced World Cup system , was appointed by the DFB to play in the national B team in 1953 . In the rounds of 1954/55 and 1956/57 he won the championship in the II Division in 1860 and returned to the Oberliga Süd with the "Blauen". In the 2nd League South, the defensive player has completed 81 league games with 19 goals in three rounds.

Oberliga and 2nd League South, 1945 to 1958

The first season of the Oberliga Süd begins on November 4, 1945 with a 16-man league. 1860 Munich ranks 9th and with Franz Bachl has a 20-time goal scorer in the attack line. The 60s inflict the highest defeat in the entire history of the Oberliga with 13-0 to the Karlsruhe FV. When in the second year, 1946/47, the league was increased to 20 clubs, the men around Fritz Sommer played their way up to fourth place; Center forward Otto Thanner distinguished himself as a 24-time goalscorer. On the 17th round matchday, January 19, 1947, a 0-0 draw was made against the eventual southern champions 1. FC Nürnberg in front of 35,000 spectators. Sixty had run with the runner series Franz Hammerl , Georg Bayerer and Sommer. In the third year, 1947/48, the team was even able to win the runner-up behind defending champion 1. FC Nürnberg. Sommer was only absent from one of the 38 league games. At the first German championship held after the end of the Second World War, the southern German runner-up competed on July 18, 1948 in Worms in front of 30,000 spectators against the champions of the French occupied zone, 1. FC Kaiserslautern. The "Löwen" team around Hammerl, Bayerer, Sommer, Helmut Fottner , Ludwig Janda , Thanner and Josef Lammers had a 1: 5 defeat against the team around the brother couples Ernst Liebrich / Werner Liebrich and Fritz Walter / Ottmar Walter the final phase of the second half, no more serious resistance to oppose. For the 1948/49 season, the so-called "Contract Players Statute" was introduced by the DFB . This made it possible for the first time legally to allow players to receive a monthly remuneration up to a maximum of DM 320 if the player continued to exercise a "civilian profession". 1860 reached fourth place under coach Max Schäfer .

In the 1952/53 season summer under coach Fred Harthaus experienced relegation from the league with 24:36 points as the penultimate. His personal performance could not have been so bad, national coach Sepp Herberger appointed Sommer to the B national team in June 1953.

Coach Schäfer returned and in the second round in the 2nd League South, 1954/55, the championship and thus the return to the Oberliga Süd succeeded. The 25-time goalscorer Kurt Mondschein played a major role in the quality of the offensive and defensive boss Sommer - with 37 goals conceded, Munich provided the best defense in 1860 - was the guarantor of the defensive department. The returnee in the league could not manage 1955/56 but relegation. With 19:41 points rose in 1860 as bottom of the table back in the 2nd League South. Right away, Sommer celebrated the championship in the 2nd league south with his teammates in 1956/57 and thus the renewed return to the league. Under coach Hans Hipp , the "Löwen" upper division record player played only four league games in 1957/58 before he ended his 13-year league career in the summer of 1958 after 231 upper division and 81 second division games. Fritz Sommer played the last league game on October 20, 1957 in a 4-2 home win against VfB Stuttgart.

Selection appointments

The disappointing league round 1952/53 ended on April 26, 1953 with a 5-2 home win against 1. FC Nuremberg. As a middle runner, Sommer had directed the defense and played a total of 24 league games for the relegated team. On June 4, 1953, he was used in Augsburg by national coach Herberger in a test match of a DFB selection against a selection from southern Germany (3: 5) as a center runner, attested by the two outside runners Gerhard Bergner and Richard Gottinger , in the team of the south. Ten days later, on June 14th, he played in the international match in Düsseldorf against Spain in a 5-2 win for the German national B team. Sommer was in the middle and Gottinger on the left and Karl-Heinz Metzner on the right, formed the pair of outside runners. The left wing, Alfred Pfaff and Hans Schäfer scored the goals. Unfortunately, the Munich player broke his leg in this game and his possible international career was over afterwards.
